Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), put an end to a two-game losing streak Wednesday and moved back to the .500 mark with a 3-2 shootout win at home against the Elmira Jackals.

The Jackals got on the board first as Carl Drakensjo took a pass from Craig McDonald to beat Jamie Hodson as Elmira grabbed a 1-0 lead at 18:21 of the first period. That is where the game would stand until the 8:42 mark of the second period, when Elmira extended its lead as McDonald raced down the right side and came in unmolested on Hodson, sliding the puck past the Vipers netminder to make the score 2-0.

Vipers defenseman Branislav Kvetan responded with a slap shot from the point off a faceoff that beat Jackals netminder Nick Boucher at 13:53 of the second to cut the lead in half. The Vipers then tied the game when Michael Krelove fed Steve Crusco the puck, who fired it past Boucher to tie the game at two just five minutes later.

The match moved into a shootout as neither team was able to score in the final period of regulation. L.P. Martin and David Beauregard were successful for Roanoke Valley in the first round of the shootout, but the first five pairs of shooters kept it locked in a tie. The Vipers sent Jan Jas to the ice as their sixth shooter. Jas slid the puck past Boucher into the net for a goal as the Vipers beat the Jackals for the third consecutive time on home ice this season.

The Vipers hit the road on Friday as they continue their home and home match-up with the Jackals in Elmira with a 7:05p.m. puck drop. The Vipers will head back down the Road to Richmond on Saturday as they take on their cross-state rivals at 7:30p.m. before coming back to Roanoke on Sunday for a 5:05p.m. match against the RiverDogs. Be sure to tune into Vipers away game action on 3WR/Fox Sports Radio, which is 910AM in Roanoke, 990AM in the New River Valley, and can be accessed via the Vipers website at www.valleyvipershockey.com.
