GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel dropped game one of a weekend set against the Tri-City Storm, 6-3, on Friday night. With the loss, Chicago falls to 1-1 on the season.
Tri-City put the pressure on promptly in the first period. Jake Wahlin broke the deadlock 5:45 into the game, knocking in a rebound to put the Storm up 1-0 after the first period.
An action-packed second period saw a combined five goals from both teams. Tri-City had all the momentum and shots leading to a fast-break tap in for Carson Meyer at 4:56. The Steel countered on the power play, as Jake Jaremko completed a dazzling tic-tac-toe from Brandon Duhaime and Tanner Laczynski. The Storm would respond with a quick one-two punch, as Peski and Limoges each scored within a three minute timeframe. A late power play goal from Steel winger Max Zimmer allowed Chicago back into the game, cutting the Storm's lead to 4-2 as the teams headed to the dressing room.
An early five-minute major penalty put Tri-City on the advantage early in the third period. The Storm capitalized and put the game out of reach with two power play goals scored just 21 seconds apart. Steel right wing Marcel Godbout slapped home a one-timer midway through the period, but it was not enough as Tri-City held on for the win.
Tri-City outshot the Steel 36-19. Matt Greenfield had 16 stops in net for the Storm. In his USHL debut, Chicago goaltender Daniel Vladar made 30 saves in the loss. Steel center Jake Jaremko scored his second goal of the season while also adding an assist.
