Jamestown Jammers News Release
The Jamestown Jammers fell 8-4 to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, falling victim to another big inning which proved to take the wind out of their sails. A 7-run 3rd inning off of newly acquired 1st-round draft pick, Jose Fernandez, and relief pitcher Holden Sprague deflated the rally the Jammers were putting together to drop them to 35-38 on the season.
The Jammers were very optimistic coming into tonight's match up sending 19-year-old and highly touted right-hander Fernandez to the mound. However, it did not take long for the Scrappers to get to him. Bryson Myles began the game with a leadoff triple which followed by a Fransisco Lindor RBI single to right. After that it seemed that Fernandez had calmed down after inducing Tony Wolters to ground into a double-play and striking out Jake Lowery to end the inning.
Fernandez came back in the second by striking out 2 and hitting one batter. However, this led into the 3rd where everything seemed to fall apart. It began with a pair of walks to Myles and Lindor.
Followed by a Wolters single to load the bases. Lowery followed with his second of 3 strikeouts during the game. Jordan Smith then followed with a bases clearing double which brought Manager Dave Berg out to pull Fernandez from his first appearance in Jamestown.
Holden Sprague came in to relieve Fernandez which began with another walk and then another double, this time from John Barr which drove in 2 more runs. A ground ball by Jerrud Sabourin moved Barr over to third which followed by a walk to Cody Elliott. Myles then followed with a RBI base hit which drove in 2 because of a fielding error by right fielder Ryan McIntyre. Sprague then struck out Lindor to end the frame.
Unfortunately for the Jammers they did all of their hitting and scoring in the first 3 innings. 2 runs in the first, followed by 1 in the second and third proved to be all the Jammers could scratch off of the Scrappers pitching staff. Ryan Goetz's single in the bottom of the third was the Jammers last hit of the game. The only innings the Jammers even had a base runner for the rest of the game was in the eighth when both McIntyre and Kentrell Dewitt walked.
The Scrappers sent left-handed pitcher Elvis Araujo to take the mound for the second time this season against the Jammers. The first appearance was eerily similar to this one with one major difference, the Jammers won the first game and lost in tonight's match up. Araujo ended throwing only 2.2 innings giving up 5 hits and 4 earned runs, while walking 6 and only striking out 2 in tonight's match up. In his only other appearance this season he threw 4 innings giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, one walk, and 3 strikeouts against the Jammers on August 28.
Before the game had began the Jammers had high hopes tonight would end in the first professional win for their $2 million first-round pick. However, he ended up throwing 2.1 innings, giving up 4 hits and 5 earned runs, while walking 3 and striking out 4. The Jammers return to Diethrick Park tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. for the final 2 games of the season.
