Richmond Kickers News Release
Richmond, VA - (Friday, May 30, 2008) - The Richmond Kickers and Hampton Roads Piranhas have announced the decision to reinstate the James River Cup, a local derby that existed between the Richmond Kickers pro team and the Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach Mariners (USL-1). For the first time in history, the 10th edition of the James River Cup will be determined between the Richmond Kickers and Hampton Roads Piranhas PDL and W-League teams, crowning a Club Champion.
At stake is the James River Cup title, which is based on the total number of points at the end of all matches played between the two clubs. With three points awarded for a win and one point awarded for a tie, the winner of the James River Cup will be decided following the conclusion of the home and away matches between the Richmond Kickers Future (PDL) and the PDL Piranhas combined with the total number of points between the Richmond Kickers Destiny (W-League) and W-League Piranhas during the 2008 season. Should the series end in a tie, the cup will remain with the current holder.
Beginning in 1996, the James River Cup competition has been in existence for eleven seasons as a local derby between the two clubs (the Mariners did not field a team in 1997 or 2001). The Kickers pro team held the James River Cup consistently for seven seasons (1998-2000, 2002-2005) before the Mariners were able to capture the title prior to the 2006 campaign. The competition has been on hiatus since the demise of the Virginia Beach Mariners prior to the 2007 season.
The Richmond Kickers Future and the PDL Piranhas kick off this year's rivalry in Richmond, this Saturday, May 31st at 4:00 pm at the University of Richmond Stadium. The two teams clash again in Richmond on Thursday, June 5th before swapping home field advantage on Thursday, July 3rd, with the Richmond Kickers Destiny facing the W-League Piranhas during the second leg of doubleheaders with the men's teams. The PDL teams are slated to collide three times this season, while the W-League teams meet twice for a total of five games and 15 total points.
