Cleveland City Stars News Release

The Cleveland City Stars did not let the long trip to Bermuda distract them in Friday's match with Bermuda. The City Stars came out sharp and scored two first half goals en route to its 3-0 victory.

The fans in Bermuda's National Stadium were given a treat in the 26th minute as Man of the Match Adriano Sella De Souza connected on one of the most exciting goals in team history. De Souza blasted the ball past the keeper while spiraling through the air.

De Souza continued to apply the pressure in the 41st minute, when he found captain Mark Schulte off a free kick. Schulte was able to fight through the mass of defenders while knocking the ball through for a 2-0 Cleveland lead.

"It was really crowded in the middle so I told Adriano to put it out wide," said Schulte. "He put it in a great spot so that I could get out and make a play on it and I actually miss-hit the ball a little bit, but it went in so we'll take it. We've been working really hard as a team and when you're doing things the right way those are the types of breaks your team will get."

Just after halftime the City Stars struck again on a break away. Making his return to the Cleveland lineup after a leg injury, #10 Derek Potteiger broke through the Bermuda defense and laid the ball off in the box for Sallieu Bundu. Bundu, as he has done consistently in the early season, capitalized on the opportunity and found the back of the net for a 3-0 Cleveland lead.

"That's a play we've been working on all season in training," said Potteiger. "I came through and Ian (Leibbrandt) did a great job of letting it go so the play could develop. The credit really goes to Sallieu because he put himself in position to score and he did a great job of finishing the play. This game was a lot of fun because we got to play in the National Stadium with a great environment, and anytime you get to do that it is exciting."

The win moves Cleveland to 4-1-2 with 14 points on the season. The City Stars will not have long to celebrate the strong performance as the team will immediately depart for Sunday's Western Mass Pioneers contest.

"Bermuda has a wonderful team and great management. There was an amazing atmosphere tonight on the island," said Cleveland General Manager Mark Geissbauer. "This was an exciting game to be a part of and we look forward to their trip to Cleveland in June. Tonight was a good game for us, but now we have to focus our attention on Sunday's showdown with Western Mass as we want to bring home another victory."
