Bakersfield Jam News Release
BAKERSFIELD, February 12, 2014 - James Nunnally scored 43 points (31 in the first half) on 15-of-24 from the field and grabbed five rebounds, but the Bakersfield Jam (12-20) lost 118-103 to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (18-13) on Wednesday evening.
Mac Koshwal and Nunnally paced the Jam in the opening quarter as they combined for 19 of Bakersfield's 25 first quarter points. Down 33-25 after one quarter of play, Bakersfield's slow start in the second period caused their deficit to grow even larger as they fell behind by as many as 19 points early in the quarter. However, Nunnally put together a 20-point second quarter performance and helped Bakersfield close the gap at halftime (62-60).
Although the Jam ended the first half with momentum on their side and only a two-point deficit, the Mad Ants managed to build their lead back up to double-digits and ended up outscoring Bakersfield 32-22 in the third quarter. Fort Wayne took full control of the game in the fourth as they captured a 20-point advantage at one point, making it a deficit too big for the Jam to overcome.
A key difference in the game was the three-point battle as Fort Wayne made 16-of-28 (57.1%) from beyond the arc, compared to the Jam who converted on just 5-of-18 (27.8%). Bakersfield held the edge in rebounds (43-38), points in the paint (52-34) and second chance points (18-16), but also committed more turnovers than Fort Wayne (24-17).
Koshwal ended the night with 14 points and six rebounds while Renaldo Major contributed 11 points off the bench. Ike Diogu had the only double-double of the game with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Damion James and Jared Cunningham each tallied 10 points.
The Mad Ants were led by Tony Mitchell who scored 25 points as a reserve. Orlando Johnson, on assignment from the Indiana Pacers, had 23 points and five rebounds while Ron Howard posted 20 points and six assists.
Bakersfield will next head into the All- Star break and will return to action on Monday, February 24 when they take on the Idaho Stampede at home. Tip-off is set at 7:00 p.m. PST and the game can be seen LIVE on CBS Sports Network.
