Jam continue streak, stay alive in playoffs

Long Beach, CA. In game one of the 2004-2005 ABA Playoffs, the Long Beach Jam defeated the Las Vegas Rattlers at the Pyramid in Long Beach. The Jam extended their winning streak to nine and improved their overall record to 20-10 as they began their defense of the Championship title.

After a slow start in the first quarter, Derrick Dial led the way back for the Jam with 9 points while Juaquin Hawkins added 6 points. The two combined scored over half of the Jam's points and gave the team a four point lead at the quarter 19-23. From that point on, the Jam never looked back. The Jam steadily increased the lead by 16 points at the end of the second quarter (47-63). Dial added 19 more points for a total of 28 while Nick VanderLaan grabbed 7 rebounds.

Despite the effort from the Rattler's Lou Kelly with 27 points and 9 rebounds, the Jam took a 21 point lead at the end of the third quarter. Jam's Jeremee McGuire stold the spotlight during the fourth quarter and was a crowd favorite with his numerous fancy slam dunks. McGuire was on fire during the second half and went 12 for 14 in field goals overall and pulled down 10 rebounds.

With two minutes left in the game, Jam head coach Corey Gaines put in 5the Jam's 11th Man of the Night, Val Lerch, and gave the 9th District councilman is moment of glory.
