Jairo Diaz joins Kernels from Tempe; A.J. Schugel to Inland Empire

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that RHP Jairo Diaz will join the Kernels from the Tempe Angels of the Arizona League and that RHP A.J. Schugel has been promoted to Inland Empire of the California League. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Tuesday.

The Angels signed Diaz as a non-drafted free agent on August 1, 2007. He played two seasons in the Dominican Summer League as a catcher and was converted to a pitcher following the 2009 season. He made 16 relief appearances with the DSL Angels in 2010, posting a 3-1 record, 3.67 ERA and three saves. In 27 IP, he allowed 22 hits and 12 runs (11 earned) with 10 walks and 28 strikeouts. He pitched in 11 games (10 starts) at Tempe with a 4-1 record and 4.08 ERA, allowing 59 hits and 33 runs (26 earned) with 18 walks and 44 strikeouts in 57.1 IP.

Schugel was a member of the Kernels 2011 Opening Day Roster and pitched in 25 games for the Kernels including 12 starts. He has a 4-3 record, 2.59 ERA and one save in 90.1 IP.

With today's transactions, the Kernels active roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with two players currently on the disabled list.

The Kernels begin a three game commuter series at Burlington on Wednesday, August 17th with first pitch set for 6:30 pm from Community Field in Burlington. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, August 20th to open a seven game home stand with games against Peoria and Clinton. Game time on Saturday is 5:05 pm with the gates opening at 4:00 pm.
