Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - With both teams scoring early and often, the Jacksonville Suns pulled away late as they knocked off the BayBears in an 11-7 victory on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, gearing back into first place in the South Division.
Jacksonville (65-48, 25-18) received solid nights from each of the first three men in their order including Lorenzo Scott who singled to start the ballgame against Wade Miley and scored on a double by Ozzie Martinez. In the second, Scott stepped in with two men on and smacked a three-run homer to put the Suns in front by four.
Tom Koehler was searching for his league-leading 14th win against the BayBears (60-50, 24-18), but the BayBear offense made that difficult for Koehler as they smacked a pair of home runs to pull within one. Sean Coughlin smashed a ball to straightaway center field to put the BayBears on the board while Collin Cowgill crushed his 13th dinger in the fourth to make it 4-3.
Jacksonville kept the BayBears at a distance in the top of the fifth with two more runs. Martinez singled and scored on a hit by Matt Dominguez. Vinny Rottino cracked a double and came home on a fielder' s choice off the bat of Lee Mitchell.
Once again, the BayBears battled back as they edged closer in the bottom of the fifth with Coughlin scoring on a single by Ollie Linton. In the sixth, the BayBears finally tied the game as Todd Doolittle (3-3) walked Bryan Byrne with two outs before a double by Taylor Harbin. Coughlin blooped a ball down the left-field line, allowing Byrne and Harbin to touch the plate.
The tie didn't last long as Bryan Augenstein (0-1) allowed four runs in the seventh. Scott walked in front of a two-run jack by Martinez while Rottino drew a free pass before an RBI triple by Dominguez. Mitchell's sac fly put the Suns back up front by four.
Each team added one more run later as Coughlin picked up his fifth ribbie of the night on a sac fly to score Byrne. Jacksonville picked up their last run on a throwing error by Byrne to score Rottino.
The BayBears continue their five-game showdown with the Suns at 7:05 on Monday night. The BayBears have also announced that Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will be coming to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12 for a special, two-day appearance in Mobile.
