JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-handed pitcher Huascar Brazoban tossed a scoreless inning for the Miami Marlins in his major league debut on Sunday at the Pittsburgh Pirates from PNC Park.

Brazoban opened up his MLB career in relief of Sandy Alcantara and promptly fanned Oneil Cruz to begin the seventh inning of Miami's 6-5 victory. After a ground out, he worked around a two-out single to pitch a scoreless frame.

A minor league free agent signee by the Marlins in January, Brazoban has pitched in 27 games this season with the Jumbo Shrimp. Over 45.1 innings, the 32-year-old has registered a 2-0 record, 3.18 ERA and a strong 59 strikeouts against only 16 walks and 32 hits allowed.

Originally signed by the Colorado Rockies as a non-drafted free agent on May 31, 2012, Brazoban reached as high as Double-A Hartford in their system before electing free agency in November 2017. Unsigned by an affiliated team, he pitched with Lancaster in the independent Atlantic League in 2018. He did not pitch in 2019 or 2020 before resurfacing with High Point in the Atlantic League in 2021.

In addition to Brazoban, former Jumbo Shrimp infielder Joe Dunand (May 7, Miami Marlins), right-handers Chad Smith (May 29, Colorado Rockies), Jason Alexander (June 1, Milwaukee Brewers), Aneurys Zabala (June 12, Miami Marlins) and Max Meyer (July 16, Miami Marlins) and outfielders Jerar Encarnacion (June 19, Miami Marlins) and JJ Bleday (July 23, Miami Marlins) have also made their major league debuts thus far during the 2022 season.

Brazoban is the 948th player to don both a Jacksonville uniform and play in the major leagues. The history of Minor League Baseball in Jacksonville dates back to 1904.
