JUMBO SHRIMP DOUBLE UP BISCUITS 6-3

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp collected 12 hits Friday in a 6-3 win over the Montgomery Biscuits. In the second inning, Jacksonville got on the board courtesy of a Santiago Chavez RBI single. Later in the frame, Anfernee Seymour registered an RBI ground out and Brian Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. After Kevin Padlo homered for Montgomery in the bottom of the second, Billy Fleming bagged another sacrifice fly in the third. A third Jumbo Shrimp sacrifice fly, this one from Joe Dunand in the fifth inning put the score at 5-1. Padlo launched a two-run shot in the sixth, but Gabriel Guerrero singled in a run in the seventh to get the Jumbo Shrimp advantage to 6-3.

ALL YOU CAN POTEET

Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Cody Poteet came into his start on April 25 with a 5.06 ERA. In the 10 starts since then, however, the 24-year-old has seen that figure plummet to 2.25. Poteet, who was named to the South Division All-Star team, has surrendered just 14 runs, 12 earned, on 42 hits in 68.0 innings over his last 10 outings for a 1.59 ERA. During that span, he has fanned 48 against 13 walks. Interestingly, the former UCLA Bruin has posted gigantic home/road splits in 2019. In seven starts at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, Poteet is 3-0 with a 0.38 ERA, yielding just 25 hits and 12 walks against 35 strikeouts in 48.0 innings. However, in six road outings, the right-hander has posted a 2-3 record and 4.76 ERA, surrendering 38 hits and seven walks in 36.0 frames with 23 punchouts. On the season, Poteet ranks second in the Southern League in both ERA (2.25) and WHIP (0.98), third in innings pitched (84.0) and sixth in batting average against (.211).

STARTER KIT

In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). Following that tough beginning though, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 59 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.90 ERA (110 ER in 341.1 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 97 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 298 (7.9 K/9) and yielded 279 hits (7.4 H/9).

THE GOBLET OF FIRE

Jacksonville pitchers fanned six against three walks on Friday, but the club has still posted very strong numbers in those categories over the week and a half. Heading into play on Saturday, Jacksonville's staff has recorded double-digit strikeouts in six of the last 10 games, recording more than two walks in just three of those affairs. During this 10-game run, the Jumbo Shrimp are boasting a 98-to-24 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 90.0 innings.

CLOSE TALKERS

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team expects to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have posted a combined 16-28 (.364) record in games determined by two runs or fewer. Interestingly, 13 of Jacksonville's last 17 games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Jumbo Shrimp have won nine of these 13 contests.

'PEN PALS

Kolton Mahoney and Dylan Lee combined for three scoreless innings of relief on Friday at Montgomery, continuing an excellent stretch for the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen. Over the last 15 games, Jacksonville relief pitchers have tossed 50.1 innings with just five runs against for a 0.89 ERA. During this 15-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 20 hits (3.6 H/9) while whiffing 53 (9.5 K/9) against 14 walks (2.5 BB/9).

BROADWAY JACKSONVILLE JOE

Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 17 games since then, the Miami native is for 20-for-59 at the plate, slashing a robust .339/.391/.525 with eight doubles, one home run, five RBIs and four walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 23.9 percent this year. However, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 45.9 percent.

SHRIMP SKEWERS

Jacksonville has won three consecutive series for the first time all season... The Jumbo Shrimp have a 19-15 record against the North Division.
