July 4, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp begin a six-game series with Thursday's 7:35 p.m. ET contest at Mobile. RHP Edward Cabrera (1-0, 4.50 ERA) starts for the Shrimp against BayBears RHP Zack Kelly (1-3, 3.52 ERA). Coverage begins at 7:20 p.m. on MiLB.tv, Sunny 102.3 FM, TuneIn and JaxShrimp.com.

JACKSONVILLE CRUISES TO 11-3 WIN

A five-run first inning on Wednesday allowed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to coast to an 11-3 triumph over the Chattanooga Lookouts. A bases-loaded walk by Riley Mahan in the first inning forced in the game's first run. Stone Garrett followed with a three-run triple and Rodrigo Vigil added an RBI single to make it 5-0. In the third, Garrett notched an RBI base hit and Vigil socked a two-run knock of his own to widen the gap to 8-0. After a three-run Chattanooga fourth, the Jumbo Shrimp answered in the fifth. Gabriel Guerrero tripled in a run before scoring on a Garrett RBI ground out. Justin Twine's RBI single in the sixth inning gave Jacksonville an 11-3 advantage. Daniel Castano earned the win with five innings of three-run ball.

SOME EARLY FIREWORKS

Heading into play on Wednesday, Jacksonville's offense was scoring a meager 3.1 runs per game on the season. The Jumbo Shrimp promptly plated five runs in the first inning - one off their best in any frame this season - en route to an 11-run output, matching their total from April 24 at Biloxi for the most in any game this year. In Jacksonville's order, all eight starting position players reached base at least once, with six earning either multiple hits or multiple walks. Stone Garrett matched a career-high by driving in five runs and Gabriel Guerrero came within a home run of the cycle. In the effort, the Shrimp set a season-high with three triples.

'PEN PALS

Heading into play on Thursday, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has not allowed a run in 16 consecutive innings, which comes right on the heels of a 14-frame scoreless streak that was snapped with an unearned run on Sunday. In fact, the last time a Jacksonville reliever yielded an earned run was on June 25 - a span of 31.0 frames. Over the last 20 games, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 72.1 innings with just six runs, five earned, for a 0.62 ERA. During this 20-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 31 hits (3.9 H/9) while whiffing 76 (9.5 K/9) against 21 walks (2.6 BB/9). A big part of the success for Jacksonville relief pitchers has been their ability to retire first batters; on the season, the club's bullpen has retired 75.5 percent of first batters faced, several ticks above the baseball-wide average that hovers around 70 percent.

DROPS OF JUPITER

Right-hander Edward Cabrera will make his second Double-A start on Thursday at Mobile. At the time of his promotion from High-A Jupiter, 60 pitchers had logged at least 40.0 innings in the Florida State League. Cabrera ranked second in FIP (2.28), third in strikeout percentage (33.2 percent), fourth in K-BB% (24.3 percent), fifth in xFIP (2.64), sixth in swinging strike percentage (14.5 percent) and ninth in ERA (2.02). The 21-year-old native of Santiago in the Dominican Republic yielded three runs on six hits in six innings on June 28 at Montgomery in his Double-A debut.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE

Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 22 games since then, the Miami native is for 25-for-78 at the plate, slashing a robust .321/.384/.462 with eight doubles, one home run, six RBIs and seven walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 22.9 percent this year. However, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 44.9 percent.

FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team expects to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have posted a combined 17-30 (.362) record in games determined by two runs or fewer. Interestingly, 16 of Jacksonville's last 22 games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Jumbo Shrimp have won 10 of these 16 contests.

MILLER HIGH LIFE

Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller has reached base at least once in 37 of his last 40 games, going 51-for-156 (.327/.382/.417) with 10 doubles, two triples, 13 RBIs and 13 walks during this span. On the season, the Raleigh, N.C., native ranks fourth in the Southern League with 83 hits, tied for 10th in stolen bases with 13 and 11th in batting average at .285. A former North Carolina Tar Heel, Miller is pulling the ball at a career-high 46.7 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 22.1 percent of the time, the seventh-lowest such mark of the 137 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances on the year.
