SHRIMP ROLL TO 7-2 VICTORY M-BRAVES
Sixto Sanchez tossed seven strong innings and all nine spots in the Jumbo Shrimp order collected at least one hit Saturday to lead Jacksonville to a 7-2 win over Mississippi. The Braves promptly went ahead in their first at-bats, building a 2-0 lead behind a Drew Waters RBI double and Ryan Casteel RBI triple. Jacksonville tied in the bottom of the first on a Riley Mahan sacrifice fly and J.C. Millan RBI double. In the fourth, an error plated Santiago Chavez before Joe Dunand lashed an RBI base hit to make it 4-2 Jumbo Shrimp. Jacksonville added to its lead in the seventh. Anfernee Seymour registered a two-run double before scoring on Bryson Brigman's RBI single, extending the margin to 7-2. Sanchez yielded two runs on five hits in his seven frames to earn the win.
SONG OF THE SOUTH
Jacksonville's 7-2 win over Mississippi on Saturday bucked a fairly disturbing trend for the Jumbo Shrimp. Jacksonville is now just 19-33 (.365) when facing off against fellow South Division clubs in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mobile and Pensacola. Moreover, the Jumbo Shrimp's run differential is -29 (174-203) against the four clubs in the South Division. In comparison, the Jumbo Shrimp are 21-18 against the North Division this season, outscoring Birmingham, Chattanooga, Jackson, Montgomery and Tennessee by a combined margin of five runs (128-123). Of the 49 games remaining on the year for Jacksonville, 29 come against a South Division club.
'PEN PALS
The Jumbo Shrimp bullpen finally saw their scoreless innings streak come to an end at 21 in the ninth inning on July 5 at Mobile. That roll came right on the heels of a 14-frame scoreless streak that was snapped with an unearned run on June 30. Thus, Jacksonville relievers went 36 frames in a row without yielding an earned run. Over the last 27 games, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 93.0 innings with just 14 runs, 12 earned, for a 1.16 ERA. During this 27-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 53 hits (5.1 H/9) while whiffing 99 (9.6 K/9) against 28 walks (2.7 BB/9).On the season, Jacksonville relievers have retired an impressive 74.2 percent of first batters faced.
HIT US WITH YOUR BEST SHOT
Jacksonville went into play on June 13 with a woeful 25-41 (.379) record. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 15-10 (.600) since that point behind some dominant pitching. In the 25 games since June 13, Jacksonville has surrendered the fewest runs (80) and hits (176) of any Double-A club. The Jumbo Shrimp also place second in Double-A in batting average against (.217), third in WHIP (1.11), fifth in ERA (3.00), tied for fifth in walks (70) and 13th in strikeouts (226).
MORE LIKE A.C. MILAN, AMIRITE?
Jacksonville infielder J.C. Millan entered play on May 17 hitting a woeful .191/.203/.235 for the season. Even so, the 23-year-old infielder was given a chance to earn an everyday spot in the Jumbo Shrimp order. Responding to the opportunity, over the last 36 contests, Millan is slashing .313/.384/.450 with nine doubles, three home runs, 24 RBIs and 15 walks. This 36-game stretch has seen Millan's season wRC+ shoot up from 25 to 106. Of the 102 hitters in the Southern League who have compiled at least 150 plate appearances, Millan has excelled with the 21st-highest ground ball rate (50.0 percent) and 28th-lowest fly ball rate (32.7 percent).
NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE
Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 29 games since then, the Miami native is for 32-for-105 at the plate, slashing a robust .305/.381/.438 with nine doubles, one triple, one home run, eight RBIs and 12 walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 22.0 percent this year. However, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 44.8 percent.
SHRIMP SKEWERS
All five teams in the South Division are separated by only 2.5 games... In an odd statistic, Jacksonville is just 16-25 (.390) when not making an error. However, when the club tallies one miscue, they have posted a 21-17 (.552) mark... The Jumbo Shrimp's 15 hits on Saturday matched a season-high for the club. Five players recorded a multi-hit game, led by three knocks from Stone Garrett.
