Elizabethton River Riders News Release

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - Following a no-hit performance on Sunday night, it only made sense that River Rider right-handed pitcher from Saint Louis University would win the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week.

Holmes had had a good season coming into this past week, but nobody expected what was coming. It started on Tuesday night at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark in Elizabethton, as Holmes started against the Bluefield Ridge Runners. He proved fantastic, twirling 6 2/3 innings of one-run baseball, with that only run being allowed against the last man he faced in the Ridge Runner lineup. He exited the game, allowing just six hits and two walks with one earned run and three strikeouts.

On Sunday though, he was even better as he threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Greeneville Flyboys. He got things rolling with a seven-pitch first inning, and then went up and down the order, allowing no runners to reach base through three innings, striking out three batters. His stuff got even more lively as the game went on. In the fourth, he did hit a batter, but stranded the runner at first with no other Flyboys reaching. In the fifth, he gave up a leadoff walk, but struck out the next two hitters and ended the inning with a flyout.

Things really started to get real in the sixth, as he got a strikeout to begin things and then a tapper back to the mound which was followed by an easy ground ball to first base to end the inning. In the seventh, with the pressure of the night at a high, Holmes put his best foot forward. He started the inning with his eight punchout of the night, before with one out, a Flyboy hitter hit a drive into the right-center field gap, but on the run Avery Owusu-Asiedu was able to run it down for the second out. On a 1-0 pitch, a ground ball to shortstop Ty Peters would end it, and complete the no-hitter. Holmes overall went seven innings, allowing just one HBP and one walk while striking out eight batters.

On the week, Holmes tossed 13.2 innings, allowing six hits and one run while walking three batters and striking out 11. On the year, he now has a 2-0 record, along with a 2.70 ERA with 26.2 innings. He has walked eight batters and struck out 21.
