Odessa Jackalopes News Release
Last night the Jacks went up against the Corpus Christi IceRays for the second time this season. Odessa went into game one last night leading the season series 1-0 after they beat Corpus Christi over two months ago, 5-2. Both teams are playing in their final games before heading into the holiday break. The IceRays were swept last weekend by Amarillo and are trying to stay alive in the playoff race. As for Odessa, a four-point weekend for them could have them going into the holiday break in first.
In the opening period, Odessa was doing a tremendous job at getting shots onto Damon Beaver. The Jacks were able to record a total of 12 shots however, Beaver stopped them all. Corpus Christi registered 10 shots but was able to score on one of them. Nathan Butler (7) tipped the puck past Alex Proctor with only 3:09 remaining in the opening period. The IceRays would take their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The middle period saw no scoring but certainly a lot of physical play. As there was a lot on the line for both teams. Nick Ahern was given a major penalty for cross-checking and a game misconduct. The Jacks were able to kill off the five-minute major although the score would remain 1-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Jacks once again outshot the IceRays, 16-14.
The final period is when Odessa finally found their stride. Tanyon Bajzer (5) made it a tie game 1:04 into the period. That marked his third-straight game with a goal. Although Zachary Dill (4) would regain the lead for the IceRays less than three minutes after Bajzer scored. Dill's goal came while his team was on a 5-on-3 power play. Another three minutes would pass and this time it was J.R. Perdion (7) finding the back of the net from the left circle. The 2-2 score would remain that way when the horn sounded to end regulation. The Jacks were heading into extra hockey for the second-straight game.
After killing a penalty to start the overtime, Trevor Taulien came racing out of the penalty box and was almost able to tuck the frozen rubber past Beaver. Play quickly went the other way and a pass from Braden Rourke was redirected off the skate by Kevin O'Keefe (1). The goal would stand, giving the IceRays the first win of the weekend series. It was the first time Odessa lost in overtime this season. Odessa finished 0/4 on the power play and Corpus Christi went 1/8. The Jacks outshot the IceRays, 41-39.
While the Jacks did not get the win, they did pick up a point to put them in a three-way tie for first place. Corpus Christi is now in a three-way tie for fifth. Tonight is the annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Ector County Coliseum. The puck drop is slated for 7:15 pm CDT.
