Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - After closing the gap to one in the third period, the Odessa Jackalopes third period comeback fell short as Garrett Larson scored a shorthanded, empty net goal to give the Mississippi Riverkings a 6-4 win on Tuesday night at the Ector County Coliseum. Despite the loss, the Jackalopes clinched their first Southwest Division title since 2005-2006 due to the Arizona Sundogs also losing tonight.
A two goal first period was the difference in the game as Jeff Nelson opened up the scoring with a penalty shot goal at 9:26, and Matt Pierce slipped one past Juha Toivonen at 17:00 for the Riverkings. From that point on, Odessa matched Mississippi blow for blow on the score sheet.
Odessa's Josh Chase and Brian Swiniarski scored second period goals along with Mississippi's Dane Marshall and Jeff Alcombrack.
In the third the Jacks pulled within one on goals from Kory Karlander and Kenny Bernard. Louis Dumont scored the game winner for the Kings in the final frame, along with Larson's goal.
Despite the loss the Jacks clinch the Southwest Division with 70 points on the season. Arizona is in second place with 47 points, but only 11 games remaining in their season.
The Jackalopes close their homestand this weekend with games against New Mexico and Amarillo. Both games start at 7:05 PM.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team is currently in its 12th season. Season tickets, mini-plans, and single game tickets are available by calling (432) 552-PUCK or visiting jackalopes.org.
