Jacks Fall to Amarillo 6-2, Settle for Weekend Split
January 12, 2019 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Odessa Jackalopes News Release
Amarillo, TX - It was like déjà vu for the Jackalopes as they found themselves down 2-1 and then 3-1 after the first and second periods. Unfortunately, lightning doesn't strike twice and the four-goal explosion they had last night failed to materialize on Saturday. Instead it was the Amarillo Bulls who exploded for three goals in the third en route to a 6-2 victory at the Budweiser Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center.
After falling down 1-0 in the first period, the Jacks tied the game off of rebound that developed off a short angle shot from Rickey Boysen. Jack Conroy, who tied the game 1-1 on Friday, put away the rebound to score his second goal in as many nights to tie the game 1-1.
However, the Bulls struck back later in the period off a power play goal (their first and only of the night) to retake the lead 2-1.
In the second period that Jackalopes had two power plays but failed to convert. Their best chance to score came when Jared Christy had a point-blank shot to the right side of the net. Jason Grande made a spectacular save with the blocker to deny Chrsity who elevated his shot in close.
The Bulls extended their lead 3-1 to (for the second night in a row) take a two-goal lead into the third period.
Instead of an offensive explosion in the third period for the Jacks, Amarillo broke out for three goals in the third including two by Logan Jenuwine, the leading goal scorer in the North American Hockey League.
Connor Smith got the last laugh with his sixth goal of the season after he tipped a pass from Michael Sacco into the top corner in the late stages of the game.
Kade Phipps made 34 saves on 40 shots in the loss, the Jackalopes scored twice on 22 shots on goal.
With the loss, the Odessa Jackalopes fall to 13-20-0-1 on the season. The Jacks will travel to Topeka, Kansas for a three-game series against the Pilots next week.
