Maryland Black Bears News Release
ROCKVILLE, MD - Black Bear fans braved snowy conditions to Rockville Ice Arena to watch Maryland take the ice against the East Division leading Johnstown Tomahawks. The result was not as they had hoped, as Johnstown cruised to a 6-0 win off the back of five power play goals.
The scoring started with a power play goal off the stick of Tomahawk forward Cam Hebert, who scored from the high slot glove side on Maryland goalie David Tomeo to make it 1-0. Colin Price struck shorthanded later that period after a failed clearing attempt, scoring five hole on the breakaway to make it 2-0. Oliver Benwell closed the scoring for Johnstown in the first period, deflecting a Hunter Toale shot on the power play again to make it 3-0.
To start the second, Oliver Benwell scored another power play goal, lifting the puck over a sprawled Tomeo to make it 4-0. Samuel Solensky made it 5-0, blasting a slap shot past Tomeo. The final goal of the game came from Cam Hebert once again on the man advantage, taping a rebound into the empty net to make it 6-0. Maryland goalie Kevin Lake finished the game off in third, allowing no goals.
Special teams were the story of this game, with the Tomahawks going 5-12 on the man advantage while the Black Bears went 0-6. Maryland returns to Piney Orchard Ice Arena with a 7:45 P.M. ET puck drop Saturday, January 19th. It will be Capitals Homecoming Night with a special appearance by Capitals great Peter Bondra.
