JackHammers Win Fourth Straight; Down Flyers 3-2

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet JackHammers (46-42) won their fourth straight game Tuesday night, downing the Schaumburg Flyers (34-54) 3-2 in front of 3,653 at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers are now 5-1 on the current home stand with two games remaining.

Joliet took a 3-1 lead into the ninth with Wes Alsup on the bump. Richard Mercado tripled into the right field corner to start the frame and scored on a Chris Schultz single with one away. Griffin Bailey entered and slammed the door shut, getting Dan Parzyk to ground into a fielder's choice and Ruddy Yan on a comebacker to the mound for the 3-2 final.

The pitcher's duel lived up to the billing with Bear Bay (8-5) getting the better of Dustin Glant (8-6). Bay struck out eight in six innings, allowing one run on three hits while Glant surrendered three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings.

The JackHammers plated their first run of the season against Glant in the first. Jonathan Wyatt doubled off the wall in right and moved to third on a Kevin Rios sacrifice. Brad Correll singled against a drawn in infield for the game's first run. Glant had tossed 16 innings against Joliet without allowing a run.

The Flyers tied the game in the third on a Travis Brown single with two outs, scoring Yan from second. Joliet recaptured the lead on a Rios RBI single in the bottom half for a 2-1 advantage.

Wyatt bounced Glant in the seventh, launching a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right center for his tenth home run of the season. Wyatt went 2-2 against Glant with a double, home run and two runs scored.

Jon Nelson went 2-4 with Rios and Correll each knocking in a run as the JackHammers won their fourth straight game, their longest winning streak in the second half.

Erik Hamren and Brian Gartley combined for a scoreless seventh inning with Alsup allowing a run on two hits in 1.1 innings.

The JackHammers and Flyers will hook up tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field in game three of the series. Aaron Guinn (0-2) and Paul Fagan (0-0) is the starting pitching matchup. Game time is set for 6:10 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel - The JackHammers evened up their record in the month of August (12-12), the second half (20-20) and against Schaumburg (7-7) - Kevin Rios now has a nine game hitting streak after his run scoring single in the third - Dustin Glant had allowed only one extra base hit to the JackHammers entering the game, spanning 16 innings. Jonathan Wyatt collected two tonight (double, home run)
