Joliet JackHammers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-CF Adam Klein (1-3) hit a two-run single and LHP Ryan Gehring (2-2) allowed two runs over seven and two-thirds innings to help the JackHammers to a 4-3 win before 6,509 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Thursday night.
The JackHammers scored a single run in the 2nd inning against Schaumburg RHP Ed Almonte (3-3). 3B Andrew Pinckney (2-3) powered a solo home run over the center field wall for a 1-0 Joliet advantage.
Joliet pushed across two more runs in the 2nd inning thanks to some clutch hitting by their number nine hitter. 1B Freddie Thon (1-5) led off the inning by popping out with DH Tydus Meadows (0-3) and Pinckney each earning walks. RF Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) popped out to left field and 2B Danny Cox (0-3) walked to load the bases.
Klein followed with a two-run single to score Meadows and Pinckney for a 3-0 Joliet advantage.
The JackHammers took advantage of an error to score a run in the 5th inning for a 4-0 lead. Rios was hit by a pitch to start the inning and retired on a fielder's choice hit into by C Phil Avlas (1-5). Thon reached on an error by Schaumburg 1B Jason Colson to score Avlas.
The Flyers touched up Gehring for two runs in the 6th inning. With two outs in the inning, 2B Jose Valdez (2-4) hit a single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch. 3B Vince Harrison (1-3) hit a single to score Valdez and cut the lead to 4-1.
DH Felix Jose (1-3) continued the hitting with an RBI double to plate Harrison to bring the Flyers within two runs at 4-2.
Gehring tossed seven and two-thirds innings in his longest outing of the 2009 season. He allowed two runs, (both earned), on seven hits which surpassed his previous high of seven innings set against Winnipeg at home on June 15. RHP Drew Shetrone pitched the final inning and a third to get his second save of the season.
The Flyers threatened to tie the game in the 9th inning. They scored a single run off of Shetrone on an RBI single by Colson. With the bases loaded and no one out, LF T.J. Wilson (1-4) lined out to Pinckney at third base. He dove to his right to double off Victor Ferrante (0-3) at third base to end the ballgame.
