Little Falls, NJ â The New Jersey Jackals completed an almost impossible comeback in the Northeast League Championship Series, with a 5-3 win over the North Shore Spirit, in decisive game five.
New Jersey kept the pressure on North Shore by picking up the first runs in the ballgame. With two outs, Craig Conway doubled, scoring one, while the next batter Jay LaFlair singled, scoring the second run for the Jackals.
Travis Oglesby homered to right field in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Jackal lead in half.
In the third, the Jackals scored their second pair of runs. Wilton Veras doubled, and Chris Rowan singled, both for RBI. After three innings, the Jackals led 4-1.
North Shore would rally back in the bottom of the fifth, with their own pair of runs. Vic Davilla tallied an RBI single, and eventually came around to score himself, on a wild pitch. Through five, the Jackal lead was cut to 4-3.
The Jackals scored a crucial insurance run in the top of seventh. With John Anderson aboard third base, with one out, Kevin Grijak grounded out slowly to short, allowing the fifth run to score.
Klae Calvert pitched six innings for the Spirit, while surrendering 10 hits, leading to four earned runs. Calvert did not walk a batter, and struck out six. He suffered the loss.
New Jersey's Joel Bennett pitched a strong seven innings, in a victory. He scattered five hits, while giving up three earned. He walked only two, and fanned eight.
