Despite being down two games to none and heading to Fraser Field for the final three games of the best-of-five series, the New Jersey Jackals fought off elimination for the third and final time to take game five, 5-3, and win the 2004 Northeast League Championship Title. This marks the third time in four years and fourth occurrence overall that New Jersey has won the league title. It was also the first time in league history that a fifth and deciding contest was played for the NEL Championship. New Jersey, which came from behind to win games three and four in extra innings, got on the board first by scoring two in the second off of eventual losing pitcher Klae Calvert. After Scott Goodman singled with two outs, Craig Conway doubled him home and then came around to score on Jay LaFlair's RBI-single for a 2-0 lead. North Shore, which lost in the finals for the second consecutive year, cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning when Travis Oglesby led off the frame with his fifth home run of the playoffs. The Jackals would add two more in the third on a RBI-double by Wilton Veras, the NEL's Most Valuable Player, and an infield single by Chris Rowan to extend the lead to three at 4-1. In the fifth, the Spirit again cut the deficit to one as Vic Davilla singled home Brian Macchi, who had two hits, and then later scored on a wild pitch by Joel Bennett, who pitched seven innings and allowed three runs to earn the victory. New Jersey added an insurance run in the seventh on Kevin Grijak's groundout to short to make the score 5-3. Aaron Myers, the winning pitcher in yesterday's game, tossed the final two innings and got Davilla to ground out to third with the tying run on base in the ninth to seal the victory for the Jackals.
