ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and the AHL's Rochester Americans, finished their season-long home stand with a win yesterday and will look to build on it as they travel to Norfolk and Reading this week.

Home vs. NOR 2-2-0, Away vs. NOR 1-0-0

The Jackals begin a three-game road trip with two meetings with the Norfolk Admirals at the Scope. The Jackals are 3-2-0-0 in five meetings this year. The Admirals won the most recent matchup at First Arena, 4-1 on Jan. 14, thanks to 25 saves by Ty Rimmer, and a three-point night for Greg Chase. Elmira won each of the two previous meetings in Elmira, 4-3, on Dec. 9, and 4-0, on Dec 12, thanks to 97 saves by Niklas Lundstrom, including his first career shutout. These wins followed a split of the first two games of the year as the Jackals won the only meeting at the Scope on Nov. 10, 4-3. Three nights later, the Admirals won 4-1 at First Arena, as Nic Riopel and Ty Rimmer stopped 36 of 37 shots they faced. Mike Seidel has three goals and three assists in five games against Norfolk this season, while Kevin Clare has three goals and Chris Langkow has five assists.

1/24 at Reading Royals - 4:00 p.m. EST

Home vs. REA 1-3-0, Away vs. REA 3-2-0

Sunday afternoon will mark the 123rd all-time regular season game between the Jackals and the Royals, making the Royals the most frequently played opponent of the Jackals. The Jackals are 55-55-12 all-time against the Royals, including a 4-5-0 record in nine meetings this year. This year, the Royals took two of the first three meetings in October. However, Elmira won consecutive 5-4 thrillers on Nov. 20 & 21 to take the season series lead. On Dec. 18, the Jackals took their third straight in the series improving their season record to 3-1-0-0 in Reading. Recently, however, the goals have been hard to come by for the Jackals. On Dec 19 & 26, Reading's Adam Morrison posted back to back shutouts for the Royals to even the season series at four apiece. On Jan. 15, Martin Oullette posted a 4-0 shutout, the Royals third consecutive against the Jackals to take the season series lead. Cason Hohmann and Colin Jacobs have each scored three goals versus Reading this year, while Hohmann leads the Jackals with six assists and nine points in the nine meetings this season.

Recapping Last Week:

1/14 vs. Norfolk Admirals: L 1-4

The Jackals jumped ahead early with the game's opening strike less than three minutes in, but faltered in the final forty minutes and fell 4-1 to the Norfolk Admirals. Nathan Oystrick scored the lone Jackals goal.

Entering tonight the Jackals had lost three in a row for the first time all season and needed a jump start offensively. The call came from the captain just 2:59 into play as Nathan Oystrick joined the rush and buried his third goal of the season to give the Jackals an early lead. Kevin Clare started the play with a feed to Mike Seidel who entered the offensive zone and played a pass across the ice to Chris Langkow who eyed Oystrick streaking in from behind for the one-time strike.

However, the Admirals steadied the ship in the second period and struck twice while firing 20 shots on target. First, Greg Chase popped in a feed in the slot off a pass from Steven Whitney on the goal line for his fifth goal of the season just 1:33 into the middle stanza. Then, at 4:57, on the power-play Scott Allen jammed home his ninth goal of the season assisted by Alexis Loiseau and Nick Pageau.

Norfolk carried the lead into the third period and added to it at the 8:12 mark when Greg Chase tipped in a pass from Charles-Olivier Roussel for his second goal of the night and sixth of the season. Chase added to his performance with a shot off the mask of C.J. Motte which landed in the slot for Steven Whitney to put in for his ninth goal of the season at 16:27 sealing the victory for the Admirals.

C.J. Motte stopped 35 of 39 shots faced but was handed the loss. Ty Rimmer stopped 25 of 26 shots faced for the win.

1/15 vs. Reading Royals: L 0-4

The Elmira Jackals were shutout by the Reading Royals 4-0 on Friday night at First Arena. Elmira has lost three in a row to the Royals and in each game the Jackals have been blanked. Reading is the only team to shutout the Jackals this season.

Scott Tanski put the Royals on the board 4:57 into the contest taking a stretch pass from Adam Comrie through the neutral zone and burying a wrist shot past C.J. Motte on the breakaway. Mike Marcou also added an assist on Tanski's fifth goal of the season.

The Royals added to their lead in the second period with another stretch pass. Brandon Alderson flipped the puck through the middle of the ice finding Joey Sides in stride. Sides had a step on the defenseman and slid a backhand shot past Motte for his third goal of the season.

The Jackals were within striking distance as the third period began but Riley Armstrong's shorthanded marker at 9:33 took the wind out of the team's sail. Justin Crandall started a two-on-one shorthanded rush and found Armstrong for his third goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, Armstrong scored again with a backhand wrap-around effort past Motte to put Reading ahead 4-0. Justin Crandall and Mike Marcou added the helpers on Armstrong's second goal of the night and fourth of the season.

C.J. Motte stopped 24 of 28 shots faced but suffered the loss. Martin Ouellette stopped all 24 shots faced for the win and his third shutout of the season.

1/17 vs. Adirondack Thunder: L 0-1

Alex Vazzano was spectacular in his Jackals debut stopping 36 of 37 shots faced, but was outdueled by Kent Simpson and the Adirondack Thunder, 1-0.

The lone goal of the contest came at 13:09 of the first period as Louick Marcotte played the puck ahead at the Jackals blue line while a defenseman stepped up on him creating a two-one-one rush for Mitchell Heard and James Henry. Heard fed the puck to his left and Henry fired a wrist shot past the glove of Vazzano for his second goal of the season. Alex Vazzano, who was making his first ECHL start since April 10, 2015, weathered the storm in the opening stanza stopping 15 of 16 shots faced.

Both goaltenders continued to put on a show in the second period stonewalling each offensive opportunity. Alex Vazzano made a highlight reel save on a three-on-one shorthanded rush for the Thunder kicking out his right pad to keep the Jackals within one. On the other end, Kent Simpson was calm and collected in net stopped each scoring chance for Elmira.

Vazzano and Simpson continued their goaltender duel throughout the third frame as the Jackals tried desperately to push one past the Thunder netminder to tie the game. Simpson shut the door earning his second consecutive shutout and third consecutive team shutout for the Thunder.

The Jackals dropped their sixth straight game and second consecutive shutout loss.

Alex Vazzano stopped 36 of 37 shots faced but suffered the tough luck loss. Kent Simpson stopped all 24 shots faced for the shutout win.

1/18 vs. Brampton Beast: W 2-1 SO

Mike Seidel snapped the Jackals scoreless drought with a game-tying goal late in the third period sending the game to a shootout where Colin Jacobs and Tyler Gjurich scored to end the six-game losing skid.

The Jackals fell behind early as Tim Bozon redirected a point shot on the game's first shot on goal just 2:13 into play. Steven Kaunisto and Angelo Miceli earned the assists on Bozon's second goal of the season. Elmira had an extended five-on-three power-play seven minutes into the opening frame but Brampton netminder Jordan Ruby stood tall sending the game into the first intermission 1-0.

Elmira exploded offensively with 19 shots in the second period and suffocated the Beast allowing just four shots but Jordan Ruby stole the show in the middle frame thwarting each Jackals scoring chance. The entire period was played in the Brampton end including a pair of partial five-on-three power-plays for the Jackals but Ruby shut the door.

The pesky pack headed into the third period trailing 1-0 for the second consecutive game and showed their resiliency late in regulation. Colin Jacobs battled down the left wing wall popping the puck to Tyler Gjurich below the goal line and Gjurich laid a backhand feed into the low slot for Mike Seidel to swing through and bury for the game-tying goal and his 100th professional point. Seidel's team-leading 12th goal of the season came at 17:15 of the third period and sent the game to extra time.

In overtime, the Jackals fired the only three shots on goal and created scoring chances but could not put the winner past Ruby so the game went to a skills competition in the shootout.

Joe Zarbo shot first and was stopped on a poke-check by C.J. Motte. Then, Colin Jacobs snapped a quick wrist shot past the glove of Ruby to give Elmira the early advantage. Scott Howes shot next for Brampton and scored. Tyler Gjurich followed with a quick wrist shot past Ruby's glove to set up C.J. Motte with a chance to win the game with a save. Chris Auger weaved in and fired a shot but Motte stoned him and propelled the Jackals to victory.

C.J. Motte stopped 18 of 19 shots faced and two of three in the shootout for his 10th win of the season. Jordan Ruby stopped 41 of 42 shots faced but allowed goals to both shooters in the shootout and suffered the loss.
