Elmira Jackals News Release


The Elmira Jackals (26-17-2-2), currently in the midst of a stretch of 12 games in 17 days, continue their busy schedule with four more contests this week, including home games on Tuesday against the Wheeling Nailers and Saturday versus the Trenton Titans. The Jackals enter the week trailing the Nailers by two points for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Friday, February 10

Reading 3, Elmira 2 (OT)

Sovereign Center

Despite goals from Jimmy Martin and Dustin Gazley, the Jackals' winless skid was extended to seven games as Elmira fell to Reading in overtime, 3-2. Former Jackal Yannick Tifu scored as time expired in the sudden-death period to give Reading its second-straight win over Elmira dating back to Jan. 14.

Saturday, February 11

Elmira 3, Reading 2

The Jackals fell into a 2-0 hole in the second period but rallied, as Chase Watson, Jordan Pietrus, and Artem Demkov all scored in the middle frame to lift Elmira past Reading. The victory was Elmira's first in eight games, as the club prevailed with two points from a contest for the first time since it beat Wheeling on Jan. 21. Brian Stewart earned his first victory since Jan. 20, setting aside 21 shots.

Sunday, February 12

Trenton 4, Elmira 2

Sun National Bank Center

The Jackals opened up leads of 1-0 and 2-1, as Matt Campanale and Martin both connected on the power play in the first and third periods, respectively. Elmira would receive a taste of its own medicine, however, undergoing a role reversal from its previous game in Reading. The Titans, who took their own seven-game winless streak into Sunday's game, put together a three-goal, third-period rally to beat the Jackals, 4-2. Former Jackal Dustin Cameron scored two times for Trenton, while Steve Silva recorded the game winner with 3:37 remaining in the third period.

WEDDING ON ICE TUESDAY NIGHT!

Valentine's Day will have even more meaning at First Arena this Tuesday, as a local couple will tie the knot during the first intermission of Elmira's game against Wheeling. Jackals fans Melissa McCool and Michael Ward will be married on the First Arena ice, with fan favorite Rob Bellamy walking Melissa down the aisle!

GAZLEY EXTENDS POINT STREAK TO FIVE GAMES

Jackals rookie sensation Dustin Gazley recorded two assists on Sunday to extend his point streak to five games. Gazley has two goals and four assists for six points during this stretch has posted points now in 11 of the last 12 games. The 23-year-old leads all ECHL rookies with 49 points and 35 assists.

NEWCOMER PROVIDES IMMEDIATE DIVIDENDS

Jimmy Martin, a rookie defenseman acquired by Elmira from Florida in late January has wasted no time in producing for the Jackals. The St. Louis, Mo. native now has three goals, all on the power play, and three assists for six points in nine games with Elmira and is +3 during his time with the Jackals. Martin collected goals in two of the three games this past weekend.

POWER PLAY PRODUCING CONSISTENTLY

The Jackals' power play jumped into third in the ECHL on Sunday, as the man advantage contributed two more goals for its 39th and 40th tallies overall of 2011-2012. Elmira has power-play markers in nine of the last 12 games. The Jackals have been on the advantage the least of any team in the ECHL this season, with 187 opportunities through 48 games. Sunday's game was the first time Elmira outchanced its opponent on the power play since Jan. 15, breaking a nine-game streak during which the Jackals were either tied with or had fewer chances than their opponents on the man advantage.
