Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals took three of four possible points in their 2010 opening-weekend series against the Cincinnati Cyclones, winning their fourth-straight ECHL season opener on Friday, 7-3, before falling in overtime on Saturday, 5-4. Michael Dubuc emerged from the ECHL's opening weekend as the league's scoring leader after the Granby, Quebec native tallied four goals Saturday for a total of six points (5g-1a) this season.
The Jackals pummelled the Cyclones with 44 shots in Friday night's victory, scoring five second-period goals to break the game open. Seven different Jackals (Dubuc, Brock McBride, A.J. Perry, Oren Eizenman, Eric Lampe, Patrick Coulombe, Yannick Tifu) scored goals in the win. Tifu paced the club with a goal and three assists while Elmira shutdown Cincinnati's offense, limiting the Cyclones to 16 shots on goal. With the victory, the Jackals started off 1-0 under new head coach Malcolm Cameron.
Elmira appeared to be in control on Saturday night, leading 4-2 into the third period. The Jackals had chances to extend their two-goal advantage in the second period, hitting the post twice on a 5-on-3 power play. In regulation's final frame, Cincinnati clawed back into the game, obtaining a redirect goal early in the session from Matt Pierce and then equaling the score late in the game on a J.C. Sawyer tally. In overtime, Barret Ehgoetz banked the puck into the goal from behind the net off of Elmira goaltender Marco Cousineau to give Cincinnati its first win of the young season. The Jackals earned a point in the overtime loss.
The Jackals lead the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division by one point after Reading and Trenton split their two games this past weekend.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Jackals host the Wheeling Nailers on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. at First Arena before traveling for the first time this season, playing the first and second of 15 total games against the Reading Royals in 2010-2011 on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
Elmira was 6-3-1-0 in 2009-2010 against Wheeling and leads the all-time series with a 19-8-1-0 against the Nailers. The Jackals collected a 9-5-0-0 record against the Royals last year and are 22-14-5-2 since joining the ECHL against their division rival.
