Week in Review

Striking first

The Jackals have scored the first goal in seven of their last nine games, dating back to Nov. 25 against Reading. In those seven games, the Jackals have a 3-2-2-0 record, giving them points in five of the seven games.

In 22 games this season, Elmira has scored the first goal in half of its games, posting a 4-3-4-0 record. With 12 of a possible 22 points in the 11 games the Jackals have scored first, Elmira has a .545 points percentage in those scenarios. By comparison, the Florida Everblades lead the league with a .923 points percentage in 13 games when they score first, logging an 11-0-0-2 record.

Improved PK

The Jackals penalty kill has vastly improved since the start of the season and they are up to 15th in the ECHL at 83.1% after going 14-for-15 in three games against Florida last week.

In their first nine games of the 2016-17 season, the Jackals penalty kill was 22-for-29 (75.9%), ranking near the bottom of the ECHL. However, since Nov. 11 the Jackals are 40-for-45 on the penalty kill, good for an 88.9% rate over 13 games, which would rank fifth in the league.

On the road again

The Jackals are in the midst of their most consecutive games away from First Arena, playing six straight games on the road. They have already played four of the six games, posting a 1-2-1-0 record, with one game in Brampton and three in Florida. They wrap up the trip with two games in Manchester this weekend.

Through 22 games, the Jackals have played 11 games at home and 11 on the road. The Jackals have points in five of the 11 road games, but are just 2-6-3-0, scoring 21 goals while allowing 37.

Game 20: Jackals falter in high-scoring game in Florida

The Jackals squandered a 3-0 lead as the Florida Everblades scored five unanswered goals en route to a 7-4 decision Dec. 7 at Germain Arena.

The Jackals played an inspired first period, taking a 2-0 lead on the Everblades. First Vaclav Karabacek scored on a rebound at 7:15 to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead and then Kyle Rankin scored with 1:50 to go in the first to double the advantage. Elmira built a 3-0 lead 3:25 into the second on an unassisted goal by Sebastien Sylvestre before the game completely turned around.

The Everblades got on the board at 6:41 of the second period and Elmira couldn't stop the momentum the rest of the period. The Everblades would score three goals in less than three minutes to go ahead 4-3 at 16:45 of the second . Michael Kirkpatrick would net a third-period hat trick, including an empty-net goal as the Everblades pulled away with a 7-4 win.

Game 21: Everblades win goalie duel, 1-0

Matt Skoff and the Florida Everblades got the better of Andy Iles and the Jackals in a 1-0 goaltender battle Dec. 9 at Germain Arena.

The two goalies exchanged saves through the first two periods, with Iles stopping 19 shots in the first two periods and Skoff turning aside 18 shots, keeping the game scoreless into the third period.

The Everblades broke the ice 2:55 into the third period on a shorthanded goal by Michael Ferrantino, giving Skoff the only goal support he needed . The Jackals would come up empty on seven power plays, including two 5-on-3 advantages in the third period, and lose, 1-0, for their second loss three days against Florida .

Game 22: Jackals deal Everblades first regulation home loss, 4-2

Andy Iles made 34 saves against his former team as the Jackals knocked off the Florida Everblades, 4-2, Dec. 10 at Germain Arena, the first regulation home loss for the Everblades in 2016-17.

After a scoreless first period with Iles and Everblades goalie Matt Skoff picking up where they left off the night before, the Jackals scored first in the second period. Casey Thrush backhanded a rebound near the crease to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead at 5:04. After the Everblades tied it at 16:18 with their Teddy Bear Toss goal, Elmira went ahead again when Vaclav Karabacek slipped a shot past Skoff with 41 seconds left in the period.

The Jackals extended their lead in the third, with Greg Betzold scoring on a rebound at 5:41 of the third to give the Jackals a 3-1 lead. Mark Bennett iced the game with an empty-net goal at 16:44 and, although the Everblades got one back late, the Jackals won, 4-2.

Week Ahead

Game 23: Fri., Dec. 16 at Manchester Monarchs, 7:00 p.m.

Game 24: Sat., Dec. 17 at Manchester Monarchs, 6:00 p.m.

The Jackals conclude their six-game road trip with their first visit to New Hampshire to face the Manchester Monarchs for back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. They are the third and fourth head-to-head matches of the season between the teams, who will meet 14 times over the course of the season.

The Monarchs have rebounded from a four-game losing streak, which included two losses to the Jackals, with four consecutive wins to surge back into first place in the North Division with a 15-7-1-1 record. The Monarchs, at 32 points, are a point ahead of the Thunder for the top spot in the division and trail Florida by a point for first in the Eastern Conference, although both teams have played two fewer games than Manchester.

Manchester enters the week with 91 goals, second most in the league, although their 3.79 goals per game ranks fourth. The Monarchs' leading scorer, Joe Diamond, is currently on loan to the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds. That leaves Daniel Ciampini as the active leader with 21 points (6g, 15a) and a +11 rating. Three players are not far behind with 19 points.

In goal, Sam Brittain has appeared in 16 of Manchester's 24 games, posting an 11-3-1-0 record with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. He is tied for second in the ECHL with 11 wins, but was dealt an overtime loss in his one start against the Jackals this season. Jonah Imoo has only appeared in two games and he is 1-1-0-0, including a loss to Elmira.
