Jackals Turn Pitchers Duel To Slugfest; Explode For 10 Runs In Ninth
August 9, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
It seemed Nick Salotti's go-ahead, eighth-inning home run would be the headline, but a season-high 10 Jackals runs an inning later upstaged him. The inning saturated New Jersey's 14-3 win over third-place Rockland.
Ironically, Salotti was 0-2 in the inning.
The Jackals sent 16 batters to the plate, a season high, off three different pitchers. Eric Federico took the brunt of it. In his Rockland debut, the righty allowed nine runs in two-thirds of a frame.
Getting the loss was former major leaguer Julio Santana. The Boulders signed Santana on July 19th and gave up his first run of the season today. Up 3-2 in the eighth, the two-run go-ahead home run by Salotti sends Santana to 0-1 on the season.
It was the first professional run given up by Santana since 2006.
The dark clouds and pregame rain jeopardized play, but Nick Giarraputo was 4-6 with two RBIs on what turned out to be a gorgeous night for baseball. Of those four hits, two came in the ninth inning.
Fresh off his 15th inning walk-off single yesterday, Matt Nandin was 2-5 with two RBIs against his former team.
Angel Berroa's solo home run in the third broke a scoreless tie. His 15 home runs this year are second on the team and third in the Can-Am League.
Boulders starter Bobby Blevins allowed just two runs in six-and-two-thirds. He earns the no-decision.
The Jackals bullpen threw nine-and-two-thirds innings yesterday, rendering Clark's seven-inning performance all the more important. He allowed three runs and earns the win to improve to 6-6.
With the win, New Jersey improves to 46-31, pushing their lead over Rockland to six games. They shave the deficit over the idle Quebec Capitales to two-and-a-half games back, the closest they've been to first place in over a month.
Tomorrow, the Jackals and Boulders will continue this four-game set. Steve Fox (10-1, 3.18) will be looking for his Can-Am leading 11th win of the season. The Boulders send out former big leaguer Gustavo Chacin (2-2, 5.23). First pitch is 7:05. The pregame begins 10 minutes prior.
