Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (5-5) lost 7-6 to the New Jersey Jackals (5-5) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.

With the Wingnuts leading 3-1 in the top of the third inning, Yasanberty Arbelo hit a two-out, three-run home run to left field off Wingnuts' starter Kristhiam Linares to put the Jackals in front 4-3. New Jersey held the lead through the end of the game.

New Jersey shortstop Jeremy Barnes hit a two-run homer to center field in the top of the fifth before Linares was relieved by Anthony Capra. Capra struck out seven and allowed one earned run in three innings of long relief.

Wichita pulled within 6-4 on a Cole Armstrong sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth before Barnes homered again in the top of the seventh to re-extend New Jersey's lead to three runs.

John Rodriguez hit a solo home run to right in the bottom of the seventh to once again pull the Wingnuts within two.

Wichita came within inches of tying the game in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and no one on base, Ryan Khoury was hit by a pitch. Jake Kahaulelio followed with a walk to put the tying runs on base. Rodriguez then doubled to right-center field to score Khoury. Kahaulelio was on his way to the plate when the ball bounced over the fence for a ground rule double. Kahaulelio was forced to go back to third, and Jackals' reliever Tim Adleman escaped the inning with the one-run lead intact.

Wichita put the tying run on first twice in the bottom of the ninth before Keith Cantwell closed out the game to earn his second save of the series.

Wichita scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first. Kahaulelio doubled down the left field line with one out and scored two batters later when C.J. Ziegler's popfly to left field fell in between two New Jersey defenders for an RBI double.

Kyle Nisson tied the game with an RBI groundout in the top of the second. The Wingnuts responded with two runs in the bottom half to move in front 3-1. Abel Nieves was hit by a pitch leading off and stole second base with Derek Perren at the plate. After Perren walked, David Amberson laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jared McDonald scored Nieves with a sacrifice fly to center, while Khoury knocked in Perren with a two-out, RBI single up the middle.

Linares took the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits in four-plus innings. Linares walked five and struck out one.

David Filak earned the win for New Jersey, allowing four earned runs on four hits in five innings of work. Filak walked four and walked one.

Nick Walters, Daniel Bennett, and Lincoln Holdzkom combined for two shutout relief innings in the eighth and ninth. Rodriguez, Ziegler, Nieves, and Perren all reached base three times. Wichita left 11 runners on base in the loss.

The Wingnuts nearly made one fan $10,000 richer in the top of the eighth inning. Had Wichita struck out the side in order, a registered fan would have won the grand prize. Walters struck out Jaren Matthews and was relieved by Bennett. Bennett fanned Jose Cuevas and reached an 0-2 count on Nisson before the Jackals' catcher grounded out to shortstop.
