New Jersey Jackals News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NJ-Joel Bennett and Ryan Halla combined on a four-hit shutout as the New Jersey Jackals won Game One of their opening round playoff series against the Elmira Pioneers, 3-0, Wednesday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. The best-of-five series continues Thursday night in New Jersey.
Bennett, the 32 year-old former major leaguer, tossed eight scoreless, three-hit innings. He struck out 12 batters and walked only one. At one stretch between the 4th and 8th innings, Bennett retired 12 straight batters. In the 8th he pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam by striking out Brandon Pernell and Ron Bush.
Halla, who had nine saves during the regular season, allowed a one-out single in the 9th, but recorded the final three outs for the save.
New Jersey scored all three of their runs in the 2nd inning. David Kennedy led off the inning after being issued a walk by Greg Keagle. The next batter, Ryan Kane, smacked a two-run home run to give the Jackals their first lead of the post-season. The third run of the inning scored on an error which was made by Elmira shortstop Ron Bush.
Keagle, who is also a former big leaguer, tossed a complete game in taking the loss for the Pioneers. He allowed 3 runs, 2 of which were earned, and 5 hits while striking out 9 batters and walking only one.
Kane was 2-3 at the plate for the Jackals with the home run and 2 RBI.
