ATLANTIC LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE MONTH ANNOUNCED

Former Pride slugger JIMMY HURST has been named the Atlantic League's offensive Player-of-the-Month for August. The Newark Bears OF/DH hit .347 with 12 homers, 29 RBIs and 21 runs in 25 games in August.

With just eleven games to go in 2002, Hurst seems a strong threat for the league's first ever Triple Crown winner. His .341 average is tops in the circuit (second place JOSE VELASQUEZ of the Surf is far behind at .322). With 32 homers, he is seven ahead of ORESTE MARRERO of Bridgeport. His 94 RBIs are 10 more than Velasquez.

The Atlantic League Pitcher-of-the-Month is TIM KESTER, a right-hander for the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. In five August starts, Kester posted a 4-0 record with a 1.45 ERA in 37-and-a-third innings. He struck out 26 and, amazingly, walked just one batter over the course of the month.

REQUIRED READING

New Hampshire's own Plaidswede Publishing of Concord has just released DEM LITTLE BUMS: THE NASHUA DODGERS written by Telegraph Assistant Sports Editor Steve Daly.

The book chronicles the rise and fall of the Brooklyn Dodgers New England League affiliate which played at Holman Stadium from 1946-1949. As many Pride fans know, the Dodgers featured future Hall-of-Famers ROY CAMPANELLA and DON NEWCOMBE in 1946, making the team the American club in the modern era to have a racially integrated roster. (Jackie Robinson was assigned to a Canadian Dodgers affiliate in 1946, the year before Major League integration).

Steve Daly will be appearing at the Sunday, September 8th Pride game to autograph copies of DEM LITTLE BUMS, which will be on sale at the Lions Den Gift Shop from now through the end of the season.
