New Jersey Jackals News Release
Mike Ness was terrific in his debut as the Jackals defeated the Worcester Tornadoes 3-2 Sunday, winning the finale on a cool, cloudy afternoon in Little Falls.
Today's ballgame marked the final time these two teams face off in 2012. New Jersey takes the season series 16-3.
Acquired two days ago along with Edgard Clemente, the former Newark Bears ace lugged his 9-2 record into Yogi Berra Stadium and lived up to the hype. In his first start with New Jersey, Ness threw seven innings of two-run ball to improve to 10-2.
He issued just a two-out, two-RBI to Worcester newcomer Jimmy Best in the second inning. Ness stuck out five and did not walk a batter, extending his home winning streak to a Can-Am-high 10 games.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Nick Salotti lined a sacrifice fly to right to cut the deficit to 2-1. Two innings later, Carlos Guzman and Chris Henderson recorded RBI singles to give the Jackals the 3-2 lead by which they would ultimately win.
Both Nick Giarraputo and Francisco Carraballo were 2-4.
Cam Kneeland highlighted the Worcester offense with a 4-4 day, his first four-hit game as a professional.
With the win, the Jackals improve to 52-36, matching their high-water mark of 16 games over .500. A three-run eighth inning by Newark helped Mike Ness' former team to a 6-4 win over Quebec, pushing the Jackals to four-and-a-half games back of Quebec for first place in the Can-Am standings.
The American Association's Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks issued Rockland their seventh straight loss, putting New Jersey eight-and-a-half games up on Rockland for the final playoff spot.
With 12 games left, the Jackals' magic number to clinch a playoff spot is six.
Today ended a string of 40 games in 41 days for New Jersey as they ride a three-game winning streak into their well-deserved day off. Tuesday, they travel to Quebec to start a crucial three-game set with the first-place Capitales. First pitch Tuesday is 7:05. The pregame begins 10 minutes prior.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
