Berkshire Black Bears News Release
A beautiful afternoon for baseball in Pittsfield saw Berkshire stumble once again, losing it's sixth straight game, 6-3 to the New Jersey Jackals. Black Bears starting pitcher Courtney Hall threw an efficient first inning but fell into trouble in the second. After Black Bears gave up one run on a throwing error by Chris Briones, Jackals first baseman Keith Maxwell homered to centerfield with two runners on base, giving New Jersey an early 4-0 edge. Berkshire bats had been quiet, thanks to starter Joel Bennett's six scoreless-inning one hit performance. But then Tito Cruz hit a two run double in a ninth inning to close the gap to 6-3. Trailing by three, pinch hitter Manny Crespo came to the plate representing the tying run. Reliever Matt Smith came in and struck out Crespo on a 3-2 fastball to end the game, earning the left-handers' first save of the season.
Courtney Hall gave up five runs, four earned with three strikeouts over eighth innings in a losing effort, which makes his record (2-4). New Jersey, starter, Joel Bennett got his first win of the season with five strikeouts, allowing only one hit over six innings.
The afternoon game at Wahconah Park made New Jersey one win away from clinching the South Division for the first-half. If Elmira loses tonight's game against Brockton, New Jersey will close down the first half competition.
