Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors were swept for the second straight day in a doubleheader with the Bangor Lumberjacks and lost five out of the six games the two teams played in three days.

The Ambassadors led game one 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Lumberjacks scored two runs with two out and ended up with the 5-4 victory.

Bangor jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Ambassadors left the bases loaded in the first, and then in the second, after Ambassador starter Reed Harvey had gotten the first two out, Edwin Thompson and Brad Hargreaves singled, with an error on Davilla allowing the two runners to be at second and third for Schuyler Doakes. Doakes doubled down the right field line driving both runners in.

The Ambassadors got one back in the top of the third, but the Lumberjacks responded with another run in the bottom of the inning. Reed Harvey settled in after that, retiring eleven in a row, and the Ambassadors scored one in the fifth, and then two more in the sixth to take the lead. In the sixth inning, Greg Schmidt led off with a double, he scored on Cedrick Harris' two out double. Ender Gonzalez then drove in Harris to give the Ambassadors the lead. Gonzalez finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Carlos Gomez came in to pitch for the Ambassadors in the seventh. After retiring Todd Brock he walked Edwin Thompson. Thompson stole second, but pinch hitter Luis Melendez popped out. That brought up Doakes, who singled to left field. Brian Macchi came up with a good throw in to the plate on one hop, but it eluded Julio Acosta and Thompson scored to tie the game. Doakes moved to third on the error on Macchi. Wade Clark came in, and Barry Paulk singled to drive in Doakes and win the game for the Lumberjacks. Don Thomas got his second win of the season, while Carlos Gomez took his first loss.

In the second game, both Mike Riley and Tim Rall matched zeros through the first three and a half innings. But Riley ran into trouble in the fourth. Donnie Ross singled with one out, then Lorenzo de la Cruz was hit by a pitch. After Edwin Thompson grounded into a fielder's choice, Todd Brock hit his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall. It was the second big home run for Brock in two days, as he hit a grand slam in the first inning of the second game yesterday.

That was all the scoring the Lumberjacks would need, as Rall went the full seven innings, walking four and striking out five. He allowed three hits and got his fourth win of the season. Riley pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. He struck out three and did not walk anyone, picking up his second loss. The losses make it four in a row for the Ambassadors, who fall to 16-25 in the first half. Bangor improved to 19-23.

The Ambassadors now go to Quebec for three games to close out the first half.
