Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals were unable to hold onto leads to 2-0 and 3-2 in the second period tonight, as the Trenton Devils scored three straight goals in the second half of the game to defeat the Jackals 5-4 at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J. on Saturay night in front of a crowd of 2,089.

Chaz Johnson put the Jackals up 1-0 at 7:22 of the first period on a feed from Olivier Proulx, beating Devils goaltender Dave Caruso top shelf. Brett Gallant was credited with an assist on the goal as well, his first professional point.

A minute into the second period, defenseman Jean-Francois David scored his first goal as a Jackal on a slap shot from the blue line for the 2-0 lead on the power play.

Dan Eves cut the Jackals lead to one at 5:16 of the second period, beating Jackals goaltender Chris Holt as a Jackals penalty came to an end. Myles Stoesz redirected home an Eves one timer at 11:11 to tie the game at two.

Tyler Donati gave the Jackals the lead back at 12:38 of the second period. His brother Justin Donati skated toward the net and dropped the puck back to Tyler who beat Caruso high glove side for the 3-2 lead.

The lead was shortlived however, as Kyle Kucharski scored a goal just 23 seconds later to even the score at three.

Dave Leaderer scored a power play goal, the first one the Jackals gave up in 28 chances, at 19:47 of the second period to give Trenton the lead for good. Leaderer's shot from the high slot was redirected en route to the net, but the defenseman was credited with the goal.

Jeff Prough recorded what proved to be the game-winning goal, his second game in a row with the deciding goal against the Jackals, on a two-on-one rush at 8:38 of the third period to give Trenton a two-goal cushion 5-3.

Travis Gawryletz drove home his first goal of the season at 11:54 of the third period from the blue line, bringing the Jackals to within one. They failed to score in the final eight minutes of action, however, and fell in regulation for the first time this season.

Holt made 14 saves on 19 Devils shots, while Caruso stopped 27 of 31 Jackals attempts.

Elmira with the loss falls to 7-1-1-0 on the season, while Trenton improves to 4-3-1-1 in 2009-2010.

The teams will square off Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Trenton in the last of four straight games between the two teams.
