Johnstown Chiefs News Release
WHEELING, Wv. - The Johnstown Chiefs suffered a 4-3 overtime setback at the hands of the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena on Saturday night.
Wheeling, looking for its first home victory of the season, built a two-goal lead with goals from Thomas Beauregard and Jordan Fox. Beauregard, working the slot in a four-on-four situation put a wrist shot past Kris Mayotte at 5:28. Fox followed with a rebound goal at 17:29. Off of a faceoff win, Joey Haddad took a hard, low wrist shot that Fox tipped in. Johnstown found itself in penalty trouble at the end of the period with Wheeling getting a little more than a minute of a 5-on-3 advantage.
Some of that penalty time carried over to the second period, but Johnstown used its strong penalty kill to survive the situation and build some momentum. Mike Knight's second goal of the season pulled the Chiefs within one nearly midway through the middle frame. From the left wing, Troy Schwab found Knight open at the center point. The Chiefs' captain curled the puck into an open shooting lane and fired a big slap shot past Jordan Parise. R.J. Anderson picked up the secondary assist, his second of the season.
The Chiefs came out with a great effort in the third period with the power play clicking for a couple of big goals. Jim McKenzie extended his point streak to five games with his third goal of the season at 2:47. McKenzie was able to redirect a wrist shot from Schwab over the outstretched glove of Parise. Connor Shields posted his team-leading fourth goal of the season, again on the power play, at 5:19. Ryan Menei and Dan Collins worked a give-and-go in the left wing corner and Shields was there to jam it home from the doorstep. Joey Haddad sandwiched a goal for Wheeling in between the Johnstown scores and the teams would move to overtime. 1:31 into the extra frame, Mitch Ganzak was able to stuff a loose puck past Mayotte on the glove side to give Wheeling the victory.
Mayotte made 23 saves in taking the loss while the Chiefs went. The Chiefs went 2-for-9 on the power play and 0-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice on Wednesday, November 11 against the Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. There will be a special pregame ceremony to honor military veterans and the Chiefs will be wearing special camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off live immediately following the game. The Chiefs are also offering $5 tickets to all active military and military veterans through advance purchase. Great seats are still available and you can get yours by going to www.johnstownchiefs.com or by calling 1-800-TICKETMASTER.
