New Jersey Jackals News Release

The Jackals' offense fired on all cylinders as New Jersey outclassed the Ottawa Champions 14-1 in a seven-inning game on Thursday night. Per Can-Am League rules, the game was only seven innings due to the continuation of the suspended May 31 game earlier in the day.

New Jersey wasted no time on offense as left fielder John Ruettiger and designated hitter Seth Spivey led off the bottom of the first with a single and double, respectively. First baseman Dean Green capitalized on the quick start and put New Jersey on the board first with a two-RBI single in the inning.

New Jersey added to its lead in the bottom of the third when Dean Green and centerfielder David Harris lined back-to-back RBI singles, giving Green his third RBI of the night and the Jackals a 4-0 lead.

New Jersey's offense continued to punish Ottawa's starting pitcher Steve Borkowski in the bottom of the third when right fielder Nolan Meadows launched a three-run home run just inside the right field foul pole, putting the Jackals up 7-0.

Miles Sheehan replaced Borkowski to start the bottom of the fourth. Borkowski went three innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Sheehan retired New Jersey in order in the fourth inning, but the Jackals got to him in the fifth.

Nolan Meadows drove in third baseman Danny Canela with a sacrifice fly to left field for his fourth RBI of the night. Then, shortstop Carlos Triunfel plated catcher Andy Mocahbee with an RBI single. New Jersey lead Ottawa 9-0 through five innings.

While the offense did its share, New Jersey's starting pitcher Tyler Levine stymied Ottawa's offense. Levine allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts through six innings.

Ottawa's third baseman and clean-up hitter Jordan Caillouet ended Levine's shutout with an RBI single in the top of the sixth, but New Jersey answered with back-to-back RBI doubles from the bats of Canela and Andy Mocahbee in the bottom of the inning.

The Jackals would score five runs in the sixth inning after second baseman Rony Cabrera ripped a two-RBI double. New Jersey led 14-1 through six.

Mat Latos closed out the game for New Jersey on the mound in the seventh, securing the 14-1 victory in game one of the series.

New Jersey's offense looks to stay hot when it returns to the diamond on Thursday, July 6 for game two of the three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
