
Jackals Sign a Pair of Matts

LITTLE FALLS, NJ-The New Jersey Jackals today announced the signing of pitchers Matt Pike and Matt Smith to contracts for the 2003 season. Terms of the respective deals were not disclosed.
Pike, a 24 year-old right-hander, was released by the New York Yankees this spring after finishing the 2002 season at single-A Tampa. Last season Pike starred for the Elmira Pioneers before being signed by the Yankees in August. With Elmira, Pike posted a 7-1 record with a 2.01 ERA in 22 games (3 starts). Over 40.1 innings pitched, he allowed only 31 hits and struck out 39 batters.
After signing with the Yankees, Pike appeared in 6 games (1 start) with Tampa and had no record and a 5.91 ERA. He struck out 10 batters in 10.2 innings of work.
Pike spent the first two years of his career in the Cincinnati Reds organization, appearing in 28 games.
Smith, a 26 year-old left-hander from Kearny, NJ, is entering his 6th year in professional baseball. Last season while pitching for Pennsylvania in the Atlantic League, Smith appeared in 24 games (2 starts) and was 0-4 with a 4.81 ERA.
In 2000, Smith posted his best single-season numbers while pitching for Newark in the Atlantic League. The former Rutgers University star was 3-2 with 2 saves in 39 games (2 starts) in 2000.
