New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Elmira Pioneers came in hitting .231 as a team, but lit up the New Jersey Jackals in the first game of their four game series. The Jackals rallied to tie the game, but their bullpen would once again crumble in the clutch. The final score was 9-8 in favor of Elmira.
Jackal starter Chad Petty lasted only an inning and a third, giving up four runs, all earned, on four hits, as the Pioneers lit him up. The Jackals did manage to score a run in the top of the second on an RBI double by Steve Checksfield. Through two, Elmira led 4-1.
The Pioneers added a fifth run in the third on a two-out RBI double by leadoff hitter Jason Tuttle.
New Jersey attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth, as Joe Jiannetti pinch hit and doubled home two runs, but the Pioneers would get the pair of runs back immediately in the bottom half of the inning off Jackal reliever Emmanuel Ramirez.
The real comeback would come in the top of the eighth. The Jackals blasted Elmira reliever Jared Stuart for five runs, to even the score at eight runs a piece. Sandy Madera drove in three with a base clearing double, while Zack Smithlin and Jiannetti both drove in one.
But New Jersey's offensive comeback wouldn't be enough. Charles Sponhouse gave up a leadoff double to Ryan Dorsey, who then advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter Tuttle singled, scoring Dorsey to hand the Jackals another last minute loss.
