Division Leading Worcester Takes Opening Game of Series

June 13, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters fell short in their first bid at gaining ground on the Can-Am League South Division leaders Worcester Tornadoes, losing 4-2 on Monday night. Timely hitting would prove to be the difference in the game, as both teams had chances to score runs. But it was the Worcester team that made the most of its opportunities and held off a determined Cutters side.

Cutters starter Tim Keinath turned in another solid pitching performance, but fell short of the success shown in his previous starts, going six and one-third innings allowing four earned runs on six hits. He struck out five Worcester batters.

On this night, Keinath was always going to be second best the Tornadoes pitching staff, led by starter Junior Guerrero, who went the same distance into the game as Keinath, six and one-third, but only allowed one earned run on four hits. When the Cutters looked like they might threaten late in the game, hurlers Steve Palazollo and David Byard closed the door effectively.

The Tornadoes did the majority of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring three runs. As is often the case in baseball, a leadoff walk to shortstop Omar Pena came back to hurt Keinath. Pena moved over to third on an Andy Brown single that took a peculiar hop over the head of first baseman Bill Peavey. Both runners crossed home when Yhanny Valera lined a double deep into the right-centerfield gap. Valera tried to stretch the hit into a triple but was thrown out at third and after Keinath retired Zach Strong, it looked like the damage would be held to a minimum. But Danilo Reynoso doubled with two down and scored on an Alex Nunez single.

The three runs scored by the Tornadoes would prove to be enough. The Cutters seventh inning rally was cut short when Andy Larned was thrown out at home by Brown following a Chas Terni single placed perfectly between third base and shortstop. Derrick Gibson had scored on the previous at bat on Vinny Esposito?s single.

The loss drops the Cutters to 5-13 while the Tornadoes increased their division lead and now stand at 8-6.

Worcester and New Haven County go at it again on Tuesday at 7:05. It will be a battle of southpaws as Jordy Alexander takes the mound for the Cutters and will be opposed by veteran Ed Riley.
