New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Trailing 4-2 and down to their final out, a two-run ninth inning single by Jackals designated hitter Scott White sent the game to extra innings, allowing catcher Craig Maddox to give New Jersey a walk-off win in the bottom of eleventh with an RBI single in front of 4,068 fans on fireworks night at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday.
In the Jackals' ninth, right fielder Andrew Larsen drew a two-out walk. The next batter, left fielder Francisco Leandro followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Ottawa reliever Angelo Burrows entered the game for starter Fraser Robinson and immediately allowed the single by White.
New Jersey reliever Brandon Martin held the Rapidz scoreless in the tenth and eleventh. In the bottom of the eleventh, Larsen drew a one-out walk which Leandro followed with a single. After White grounded out to put runners on second and third with two outs, Maddox scorched a pitch up the middle for a single to give the Jackals the victory.
After spotting the Rapidz a 5-0 lead in last night's 7-6 loss, the Jackals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when center fielder Zack Smithlin scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ramon Nivar to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, the two teams traded runs. In the top of the frame, Ottawa catcher Kyle Geiger doubled home first baseman Jabe Bergeron who had reached on a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Nivar to tie it at one. In the bottom of the inning, the Jackals re-took the lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Scott White, which scored first baseman Marcos Rodriguez to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead.
Immediately following the final out in the top of the third inning, the skies over Little Falls opened up, forcing a rain delay. When play continued, Ottawa catcher Kyle Geiger launched a three-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning to give the Rapidz a 4-2 lead. That score held until the bottom of the ninth.
Martin (1-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit over the final two innings. Strankman (0-2) gets tagged with the loss after surrendering the game-winning hit.
The Jackals and Rapidz finish their four-game series tomorrow evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. with Michael Vicaro taking the hill for New Jersey against Ottawa's Mike Kusiewicz. If you can't make it out to the game, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning ten minutes prior to the start of the game.
