July 24, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Despite a six-run rally by the New Jersey Jackals in game two of Thursday night's doubleheader, the Quebec Capitales earned the sweep of the twin bill by scores of 4-1 and 8-6 behind stellar pitching performances by Orlando Trias and Michel Simard at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In game one, New Jersey jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when C Matt Lauderdale reached on a two-out error by Quebec SS Jose Contreras before RF Marcos Rodriguez singled up the middle. That score held until the top of the fifth inning when the Capitales plated four runs off Jackals' starter Isaac Pavlik. In the Quebec fifth, an RBI single by C Patrick D'Aoust followed by an RBI double by CF Josh Colafemina made it 2-1 Capitales. After a Michael Goss RBI groundout made it 3-1, Contreras doubled home the fourth run of the inning to give Quebec a 4-1 lead. That would cap the scoring. Trias (4-0) remained perfect for Quebec, hurling seven innings while allowing one unearned run on four hits. Pavlik (5-3) took the loss for New Jersey, surrendering four runs on eight hits over seven innings. In game two, Capitales starter Michel Simard tossed a gem, allowing eight hits over six shutout innings to improve his record to 8-1 despite the Jackals rallying for six runs while down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Quebec scored runs in each of the first three innings against New Jersey right-hander Aaron Tressler to take a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, the Capitales chased Tressler from the game with five runs to extend their lead to 8-0. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Jackals rallied to score six runs. After Quebec reliever Jason Schutt retired the first two hitters he faced, CF Zack Smithlin and 2B Bryant Nelson singled before a three-run homer by LF Luke Allen made it an 8-3 game. After back-to-back base hits by 3B Chris Kelly and 1B Juan Tejeda put two runners aboard, Lauderdale hit a grounder to first, but Schutt dropped the toss from 1B Eddie Lantigua to load the bases and keep the rally alive. The next batter, Rodriguez, hit a dribbler to short which Contreras threw into the first base dugout, enabling two runners to score as New Jersey pulled within three at 8-5. C Craig Maddox then beat out an infield single on a grounder behind third when 3B Patrick Deschenes' throw pulled Lantigua off the bag to make it an 8-6 game. Schutt then retired pinch hitter Andrew Larsen on a fielders choice to end the threat.

For New Jersey, Tressler (2-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on 13 hits in 6 1/3 innings. In the loss, Smithlin went 3-4 while swiping two bases as he regained the Can-Am League lead with 20 stolen bases.

The Jackals travel to Ontario, Canada on Friday night to begin a three-game series with the Ottawa Rapidz at 7:05 p.m. at Ottawa Stadium. You can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
