New Jersey Jackals News Release

It had the feel of a home opener. A buzz from 4,117 fans filtered throughout Yogi Berra Stadium for the second game of the doubleheader between the Worcester Tornadoes and New Jersey Jackals, which was scheduled due the rain-out on June 2.

Fans were giddy to see the notorious fireworks display that lit up the ballpark that occurred minutes after the Jackals dropped their second straight game of the night to the Tornadoes 5-3.

The two-run defeat was the latter of a Jackals 6-3 loss earlier in the night, a game that started at 5 p.m. and played in both bad weather and field conditions.

The Tornadoes (8-2) wasted little time to get on the scoreboard during the first game. Josh Beauregard led-off the game with a homerun off Jackals staring pitcher, John Kelly, a shot that flew high into the rain and over the right-field fence.

After two consecutive walks surrendered to Zach Strong and Chris Colabello, the Tornadoes drove-in two more runs, a single of the bat of Keith Beauregard followed by a sacrifice fly that scored Collbello.

A 3-0 first-inning deficit was quickly answered by the Jackals, who got consecutive singles from Ricardo Cordova and Wilton Veras. Both runners then advanced to second and third on an error by the left fielder, whose legs flew up under him due to the slippery grass in the outfield. Bill Peavey knocked home Cordova on a groundout to second to cut the Tornadoes lead to 3-1, but the Jackals would leave two runners on base in the inning.

When Kelly entered the fourth, Worcester extended its lead to 5-1 with a bases-loaded walk by Marcos Rodriguez loaded and a Josh Beauregard sacrifice fly, which scored Pat Perry who had singled earlier. Willie Espinal relieved Kelly and got the final three outs.

The best chance of the Jackals (3-6) overtaking or getting within grasp to Worchester's lead was in the sixth. Wilton Veras led off the inning with a single, and after a Bill Peavey walk, scored on a John Lindsey RBI single. Peavey would score on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Joe Mihalics. It would be the last run in the game by the Jackals.

Kelly pitched 4 innings, allowed four earned runs on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts while getting the loss

Worcester starting pitcher Reid Willet earned the win during his superb five inning outing of just two-hit ball.

In the second game, the announced crowd of 4, 117 fans witnessed a late comeback by Worcester to win 5-3.

Guillermo Reyes committed a critical throwing error in the top of the seventh on a throw to first base. With an accurate toss, the inning would be over and the Jackals would have had the opportunity to end the game in the seventh and last inning.

Joe Mihalics hit an RBI single in the second that scored Peavey, who led the inning off with a single.

The 1-0 score would carry into the top of the fifth. Josh Brey, who started for the Jackals, pitched with precision until getting hit by a pitch that ricocheted off his leg.

While Brey recovered fast from the come-backer, he lunged to throw the ball to first and committed an error that scored Bob Tewksbary, who doubled to left-center to start the inning.

The Jackals added a third run on a Veras RBI single in the fifth, but Worcester scored its third run on a Colabello double-play that scored Zach Strong to tie it at 3.

David Byard came into the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning for the save while Alex Pena earned the victory. He pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks.
