Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Alaska Aces (26-18-1-6) scored two power-play goals and a shorthanded goal to down the Elmira Jackals (9-36-6-1), 4-3, at First Arena Thursday night. It was the first game between the Jackals and Aces since November 2010 and the only time the teams play this season.

The Aces raced out to a 1-0 lead in a physical first period, taking advantage of a failed clear by the Jackals halfway through the first period. Danny Moynihan ended up with the puck in the slot before he turned a fired a wrist shot past Jason Kasdorf for a 1-0 Aces lead at 10:27 of the first.

Both teams pumped home a pair of goals in the second period, which kept the Aces ahead by one through 40 minutes. Just 2:39 into the second period, on their second consecutive power play, Tim Wallace converted on a rebound to give the Aces a 2-0 lead. He tipped the initial shot, but Kasdorf made the left pad save before he pounced on the loose puck to bury his 15th goal of the year.

Elmira responded a few minutes later when Justin Kea received a breakaway pass from Kenton Miller. Kea skated between the circles before firing home his sixth goal of the season at 5:54 to get the Jackals back within one.

Halfway through the second period Alaska reclaimed that two-goal lead with a shorthanded goal by Yan-Pavel Laplante just 12 seconds into a Jackals man advantage. The goal came on a breakaway at 10:30, but the Jackals again pulled within one just over a minute later. After Mackenze was issued a five-minute major for kneeing, the Jackals struck on a 5-on-3 power play on a perfect wrist shot from near the top of the left circle by Davis Vandane, his fifth goal of the season to cut the Aces lead to 3-2.

The teams continued alternating goals in the third as the Jackals were bidding for a comeback win. The Aces built another two-goal lead at 12:30 of the final period on a power-play goal by Steven Tarasuk from the top of the right circle.

The Jackals had another answer, which came at 16:41. Just moments after a brief 5-on-3 expired, Miller, skating in his 300th professional game, received a pass from Sebastien Sylvestre and skated to the left circle. He snapped a shot, which may have grazed the stick of an Aces defenseman, and went inside the near post for his team-leading 17th goal of the season, cutting the deficit again to one, 4-3. The Jackals had a flurry of chances with an extra attacker, but they couldn't find the equalizer, as Alaska held on for a 4-3 win.
