Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals lost a 2-0 lead and fell 3-2 to the Quad City Mallards Saturday night at the First Arena.

Elmira came out gunning in the first period and jumped out to the lead four minutes into the game. Rookie Chris Chaput blocked a clearing attempt by Quad City goaltender Jason Tapp, corralled the rebound and then fired the puck into the empty net before Tapp could recover. The goal was unassisted at 3:59. Fellow rookie, and Jackals leading scorer, Jarrett Konkle made it 2-0 at 9:22 with a sniper-like power play goal, assisted by Chaput and the Arena was overflowing with energy. The Mallards took away some of the momentum moments before the first intermission. Joel Pullman scored on a back-hand shot at 18:40 to make it 2-1 after one period.

After the first recess, the Jackals tried to reassert themselves but we held back by numerous 2nd period penalties. Elmira was called for nine straight minor penalties, six of which were called in the middle frame, giving Quad City multiple opportunities to tie the game. However, the Jackals killed off all the penalties in the second period, including a lengthy five-on-three Mallards power play, only to concede the tying goal from Anthony Blumer at with 55 seconds left in the period.

In the third Elmira was handed another 5-on-3 man disadvantage situation and they came close to getting away with it, but to no avail. Chad Woodward banked his shot off the underside of the cross bar for a power play goal at 9:28, giving the Mallards their first lead and what would end up becoming the game winning goal.

Jason Tapp survived Elmira's early pressure to get the win, stopping 23-of-25 shots as Quad City improved to 4-3-1 on the season. Ryan McIntosh was fantastic in his second start of the season, making 33 saves on 36 shots, but was handed the loss as Elmira fell to 2-5-0.

The Jackals are set up for instant redemption as they will host the Quad City Mallards again Sunday at 4:05 pm at the First Arena to finish off their 4-game week. Next week Elmira heads to Roanoke Wednesday November 9th for a mid-week match up with the Vipers before returning for two games against Richmond Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th at the First Arena. Sunday, November 13th Elmira is back in Virginia for another battle with Roanoke Valley.
