Jackals Force Overtime But Lose to Everblades
February 25, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - Mike Ferrantino completed a three-point night with the game-winning goal 2:03 into overtime as the Florida Everblades (36-11-2-3) slipped past the Elmira Jackals (10-36-7-1), 3-2, in overtime Saturday night at First Arena.
In the rubber match of the five-game season series, the teams played a back-and-forth first period that resulted in a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes. Florida struck first just 2:53 into the game on a transition goal from Stephen MacAulay. He snapped a shot from the right circle over the shoulder of Andy Iles to give Florida a 1-0 lead.
The Jackals responded later in the first with a terrific end-to-end rush. Kenton Miller stepped into the offensive zone on a 3-on-2 with Casey Thrush and Charlie Mosey. Miller passed to Thrush at the left circle and he quickly tapped it back to Brycen Martin, who jumped up into the rush. Martin fired home his second goal of the season from the slot to tie the game 1-1 at 9:05 with Miller and Thrush picking up the assists.
Florida wrestled control in the second period to the tune of an 18-7 shots advantage, but all of that turned into just a one-goal lead for the Everblades after 40 minutes. The only goal of the period came on a faceoff win in the Jackals zone. The puck was tapped back to the right point where Kevin Raine took a shot. Iles got his right arm on it, but the puck trickled over the line to give the Everblades a 2-1 lead at 7:07 of the second.
Facing that one-goal deficit to begin the third, the Jackals rallied to force overtime late in regulation. On just their second power play of the game, Miller got the puck down near the bottom of the left circle. He snapped a wrist shot under the crossbar that pinged off the water bottle. Although initially not called a goal, the officials came together and determined that the puck was in, which tied the game 2-2 with 3:20 left in regulation. Matt Lane and Davis Vandane picked up assists on Miller's 19th goal of the season, which forced overtime.
In the extra period, Miller opened with a breakaway chance, which was stopped by goalie Steve Racine. A few moments later, Matt Berry had a breakaway for Florida, but he missed wide on the backhand. Finally it was Ferrantino who finished the game on a strong move from the left circle to send the Everblades to a 3-2 overtime win at 2:03 of overtime.
The Jackals dropped to 2-7 in games decided in the five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period while the Everblades improved to 5-2.
