STEELHEADS: Tansey's Two Power Mavs Past Steelheads
February 25, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Independence, MO (2/24/17) - Kevin Tansey's second goal of the game, a power play tally in the second period, held up as the game-winner as the Missouri Mavericks (25-20-7) rode 17 third period saves from Josh Robinson to a 4-2 win over the Idaho Steelheads (29-18-7), spoiling the Steelheads first ever visit to Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the Steelheads, as well as a three-game road winning streak.
Tansey's power play goal at 12:27 of the second period broke a 2-2 tie to put the Mavericks in front for good. With Missouri forward Kyle Schempp curling in the far corner of the Idaho zone, Tansey crept down from the left point and posted up in front of the Idaho crease. Schempp whipped a pass to the front of the net, the pass hitting Tansey in the skates and laying there for the rookie defenseman to bury past Landon Bow for a 3-2 Mavericks lead.
The goal snapped a streak of 26 consecutive penalty kills for the Steelheads. Shawn Pauly scored into an empty net with 33 seconds left in regulation to put the game away.
The Maverick's scored the first two goals of the game, scoring 47 seconds apart midway through the first period. At 9:23 of the first period, defenseman Luke Juha carried the puck over the Idaho line and fired a wrist shot that was blocked, the rebound coming right to the slot for a Tansey one-timer and a 1-0 Missouri lead. In a nearly identical broken play at 10:10, a Don Olivieri shot was blocked and rolled to the slot for Dane Fox to score his 22nd goal of the season.
The Steelheads answered back to tie the game late in the first period on consecutive power play chances. Just 14 seconds into their first power play chance, Rob Linsmayer found a loose rebound from a Will Merchant shot that got behind Robinson, and he finished it for his tenth goal of the season at 18:37. Merchant would score as well on a power play 1:14 later, finding the rebound of a blocked Linsmayer shot high in the slot and powering it past Robinson for his 18th goal of the season.
Merchant's 11 power play goals this season are tied for first among rookies in the ECHL.
The Steelheads had a prime opportunity to tie the game late in the third period, when Jefferson Dahl received a centering pass alone in front of Robinson only to be denied by the glove of the ex-Steelhead.
Landon Bow stopped 26 of 29 shots in a losing effort, his first regulation loss in the ECHL since November 9th.
The Steelheads and Mavericks meet again on Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, their final meeting of the regular season, with puck-drop scheduled for 6:05pm MT and the game available on 1350 KTIK and on ECHLTV.

PLAY OF THE GAME:
The Mavericks successfully clogged the ice throughout the game, and the Steelheads had limited opportunities alone in front of Josh Robinson in the final two periods. Jefferson Dahl had the best chance, getting lost on the Mavericks' defense in front of the Missouri net when the puck came to his stick. In a stand-still showdown at the top of the Missouri crease, Dahl deked to the backhand and tried to go glove side on Robinson, which the goaltender fought off just before he was knocked backwards into the goal post. Idaho would not get a better chance the rest of the way.
