New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - After five hours and four minutes of baseball, and a combined 15 runs and 23 hits, just a routine fielders choice pushed the Worcester Tornadoes past the Jackals in 12 innings, 8-7. Worcester third baseman Zach Strong beat out a slow-rolling double play ball to put the visitors ahead by one, and they held on in the bottom of the 12th to pick up the victory.

The last inning ruined what was otherwise a fantastic comeback by New Jersey. After the top of the fourth, the home side was down 6-0, and Worcester starter Alex Peña was cruising. However, the Jackals exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame, kicked off by a Horace Lawrence two run triple. The Tornadoes tacked on one in the top of the sixth with a Josh Beauregard RBI single to increase the lead to 7-5, but Benji Gil's solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh brought the deficit back up to one.

The score remained the same until the last half of the ninth, when New Jersey put Benji Gil on second base with one out. Gil would then score on a disputed double hit by Elvis Corporan, with the Jackals contending it should have been a game-ending homerun.

Both squads then traded zeroes across the board until the 12th, when Worcester got the win. Gil was huge for the Jackals, going 3-for-6 with two runs scored, 2 RBI and his first homerun in a Jackals uniform. Zach Smithlin had a 3-for-6 night, Horace Lawrence was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and Steve Checksfield added two hits of own.

For the Tornadoes, it was Alex Nuñez leading the way with an impressive line of 3-for-5 with two runs scored and 2 RBI. Lucas Taylor also contributed an RBI double on the night. The Jackals finish up against Worcester in their last home game of the season tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and other information, please call the Jackals Ticket Office at 973-746-7434 or visit www.jackals.com.
