Rox, Grays split doubleheader

BROCKTON - The Brockton Rox split their Tuesday night doubleheader with the Can-Am Grays losing the first game, 3-2, but bouncing back to win the second game, 7-2.

Mike Henry pitched The Grays (9-33) to victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Henry (7-2) went the complete seven innings giving up two runs on six hits against his former team. Oil Can Boyd (4-4) pitched the complete game for the Rox giving up three runs on five hits.

The Rox (28-14) scored first when Brad Rosenblat hit his 12th home run of the season to give the Rox a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Grays tied the game in the third inning. Alex Garcia doubled and stole third base. Garcia then scored on Bernard Caston's groundout.

In the fourth inning the Gray's took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run by Larry Best - his second of the season.

The Rox tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the inning. Willie King tripled and scored when Matt Cucurullo reached on an error.

Joe Jianetti broke the tie in the fifth with his 11th home run of the season, giving the Grays the final 3-2 lead.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Rox stormed out of the gate with five runs in the first two innings. The Rox early offense was highlighted by Matt Cucurullo's fifth home run season to lead off the first inning.

The Grays scored their only runs in the fifth inning. Alex Garcia singled to score Scott Grimes, and Larry Best scored on an error by Andrew Salvo.

The Rox added single tallies in each the fifth and sixth innings, en route to the 7-2 victory.

Kevin Beavers pitched 4.2 innings giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and one walk. Beavers (6-5) struck out six in picking up the win. Evan Neiser (1-3) took the loss for the Grays.

Beginning Friday, The Rox will host the New Jersey Jackals in a four-game series to close out the regular season. Brad Guy (1-3) will start Friday's game for the Rox. The Jackals have not yet named a pitcher for Friday. The game will feature a post-game firework's display. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
