New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - Saturday's doubleheader between the New Jersey Jackals and Sussex Skyhawks offered a little bit of everything. For those who prefer displays of offensive prowess, game one of the afternoon was right up their alley. Game two offered a mesmerizing pitcher's duel that ended in dramatic fashion. The end result was a day of evenly matched baseball that result in New Jersey and Sussex splitting the two games at Yogi Berra Stadium after Friday's rain out. The Jackals bats were still red hot in game one of the afternoon after they had put up 20 runs in two games against New Hampshire on Wednesday. New Jersey struck early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning against Skyhawks starter Kyle Ruwe (8-6). After the Jackals loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, left fielder Jerod Edmondson laced a two-run double that opened the scoring. The very next batter, catcher Matt Lauderdale, blasted a three-run home run - his fourth of the season - over the left field wall to make it a 5-0 lead. New Jersey refused to cool off, scoring runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings as well on sacrifice flies from right fielder Quinn Stewart and center fielder Timo Perez, before Stewart blasted a solo home run - his eight of the season - in the fifth inning. The eight runs were more than enough for starter Isaac Pavlik (6-6) who allowed just two runs on five hits over six frames in earning the victory. The only damage from the Sussex bats came on an RBI-single by second baseman Chris Brown in the second inning and a sac fly by designated hitter Jorge Moreno in the fifth, setting the final score at 8-2. Game two proved to be a much different story with Jackals starter Ted Serro and Sussex starter Roger Lincoln battling back and forth to out due the other on the mound. Neither pitcher allowed a hit through the first five innings, with Serro (6-6) issuing two walks and allowing an unearned run to cross the plate in the second inning. Sussex designated hitter Chris Kelly walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a groundout and eventually moved to third on a passed ball against Jackals catcher Chris Chiarappa. Later in the inning he would score on a sac fly by third baseman Jeremy Hunt. The Skyhawks would add two more runs in the sixth inning with an RBI-double from right fielder Maikle Jova and an RBI-single from Kelly to make it a 3-0 game. Lincoln (5-7) for his part was even more dominant than Serro, pitching five perfect innings to start the game in his first appearance against New Jersey this season. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh inning that the Jackals were able to break through against the left-hander who had his best outing of the season. With a runner at first and one out, first baseman Myron Leslie blasted his 16th home run of the season over the left field wall, to cut the deficit to just a single run. Moments later Edmondson ripped a single to center that put the tying run on base for New Jersey. The Skyhawks went to the bullpen and brought in closer Sandy Nin to shut the door on the Jackals. Edmondson would promptly steal second before designated hitter Quentin Davis went down on strikes for the second out of the inning. With Stewart at the plate, Sussex catcher Ryan Boelsen let a ball ricochet off his mask and roll to the backstop, allowing Edmondson to advance to third. It was only false hope though as Nin got Stewart to strikeout swinging to finish the game and earn his 10th save of the season. After splitting the doubleheader New Jersey stays tied with the Brockton Rox for the best overall record in the Can-Am League, which will grant home field advantage throughout the postseason. New Jersey and Sussex will conclude their three-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch schedule for 2:05 p.m. The Jackals will turn to left-hander A.J. Wideman while the Skyhawks will give the baseball to right-hander Carter Clements. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com with the pre-game show starting 10 minutes prior. The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ.
