Kansas City Comets News Release
ONTARIO, CA. - The Comets (10-6-4) wrapped up their swing through Southern California with a 4-3 win over the Empire Strykers at Toyota Arena Wednesday night. Christian Anderaos sent home the game-winning goal with 43 seconds left in regulation to seal the win for Kansas City.
As they did on Sunday in San Diego, the Comets ceded the first and only goal of the opening quarter to the home team. Marco Fabián extended his goal scoring streak to 14 games to begin his MASL career and in doing so gave Empire a 1-0 lead headed to the second quarter.
The Strykers doubled their lead on a goal by Howard Miller Jr with an assist by Fabián to make it a 2-0 game with 9:16 left in the first half.
Zach Reget put the Comets on the scoreboard just over a minute later with his 26th goal of the season. His goal also made him the leading scorer in the MASL with 37 points on the season. With his marker, the game went to half time with the Strykers up by just one goal at 2-1.
Kansas City killed the first of two penalties early in the third quarter and the found the equalizing goal off the foot of Berto Palmer to level matters at 2-2 with 3:53 to go in the frame.
Less than a minute later, Ray Lee sent a ricochet off the end boards and then Empire keeper Brian Orozco to give the Comets a 3-2 lead as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
The Comets successfully killed the Strykers' second power play of the game less than 90 seconds into the final quarter and both teams had decent scoring chances but could not convert, until there was just 1:19 to go in regulation. Alan Perez beat Comets keeper Nicolau Neto to make it 3-3 and overtime seemed certain.
Christian Anderaos had other plans however, and his third goal of the season, this one the game-winner for Kansas City.
